Are you sure, because from where I am looking at things he is leading the charge towards right wing RSS philosophy and the whole nation is collectively moving towards that. I hope you are right.
In a democracy no one can be sure of anything till the votes are counted.
That said, some observations.
India is a huge electorate. And this electorate is a fractured electorate along many cleavage planes. Religion, region, caste, language, race (yes, we are more than one race, regardless of what the OOI loons would have you believe) being the important ones at the national level.
2014 saw an anti-Muslim Hindu polarization. No other way to be polite about it. The polarization was wrought on the plinth of targeting and hating one particular large group of Indians who were made out to be the villains of the piece for our Partition in 1947.
Never mind the fact that none of these, on either side, was even born then.
But the overarching sentiment was for change. Anti incumbency against the very corrupt UPA II. And a mistaken (in retrospect, 20/20 eyesight and all of that ...) belief that Modi would prove to be a strong man, an economic miracle worker, the leader India needed to make the next big step.
The last big step having come under, designed and executed by the Congress more than a quarter century earlier.
So rapid development and economic progress, jobs for our aspirational youth bulge, strong muscular policy and action relating to security (foreign and domestic), clean non corrupt governance were the plinths India voted for the BJP and Modi on.
And across the non Muslim populace in varying degrees a desire to see "bad" Muslims being brought in check and put in place.
Gujarat happened under Modi's watch. That bit of history is never going to go away. But the country needed to move on after 10+ years of intense legal grilling, during which the Congress, in power, tried everything.
But India is a Hindu country. And the Congress are not Muslim either. And Gujarat was not the first riot India had seen. And a burnt train full of Hindu passengers is a burnt train full of Hindu passengers. That is also something that is never going to go away.
So we voted for Modi. Knowing. But hoping.
Now 3 years on it is clear that this entity, the Sangh and the BJP, represents and will always represent, ONLY the HINDUS of India.
And over time, when they are done with the undesirables (non Hindus, first the Christians and the Muslims, and from there the smaller minorities), they will turn on themselves.
Desirable "right" Hindus versus undesirable "wrong" Hindus.
The country is waking up.
The intolerance and brain farts like demonetisation and empty words with pathetic results have both helped.
India is a poor country.
We will look out for No. 1 first.
And Modi and the goons are hurting the No. 1 of many Indians.
That's really the bottom line.
No fancy religious stuff involved. He's hurting and not helping. So ...
