Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said today that China concocted national security charges to pin on Canadians Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig following the arrest of Huawei telecom executive Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver — smacking down a claim by China's ambassador that the cases are not linked.

"It is obvious that the two Michaels were arrested on trumped-up national security charges days after we fulfilled our extradition treaty responsibilities toward our ally, the United States," Trudeau told reporters during a news conference today.

Kovrig, a former diplomat who was working for an international non-profit group, and Spavor, an entrepreneur who promotes tourism and investment in North Korea, are Canadian citizens who were detained separately by China more than two years ago.

They were arrested in December 2018 shortly after Huawei telecom executive Meng Wanzhou was arrested by Canadian officials in Vancouver.

Meng was arrested on a U.S. extradition request over allegations that she lied to a Hong Kong banker in August 2013 about Huawei's control of a subsidiary accused of violating U.S. sanctions against Iran.

The two men stand accused of spying on China.

Trudeau's comments came after China's ambassador to Canada, Cong Peiwu, tried to put some distance between the two cases during an interview this weekend with CBC News.

Cong was pressed to say why — if the cases are not linked — he brought up Meng's confinement to her mansion in Vancouver when asked about the two Canadian prisoners. Cong said there is clear evidence affirming their guilt but "there's nothing connecting" their case with Meng's.

"Chinese officials at the time were very clear that they were absolutely connected as a frame," said Trudeau.

"Nothing the ambassador can say now will dissuade me from understanding that it is indeed the case."

Trudeau insults our intelligent. We all know what's going on. What happen to Meng Wanzhou is nothing but trump up charges in a kangaroo court just like what happened to Wen Ho Lee 20 years ago.

The question is what can Trudeau do?
On the Chinese national that Canada arrested, Its a matter for the courts, so nothing.

If allegations cannot be proven in court, she'll walk free. If allegations are proven, then the crown must prove that such actions were against Canadian law as well, thus clearing the way for extradition.

On the Canadians that China detained, Canada can finally get Biden to help add pressure to bring them back. In the end, it's still on the whim of China.

Just like West doesn't trust the Chinese Justice system, I am sure the Chinese don't give a rat about the Canadian court. China is Powerful enough to not come under any pressure and on the point, I am sure China has evidence against the Canadian citizen in their custody.

Xi doesn't care about tiny little court cases as dealing with the fate of mere individuals is beneath him.

Trudeau on the other hand cares a great deal.
A tiny little court case deals with petty crime, and civil suits.

This is a major international issue that involves the governments of US, Canada, and China.

Xi is probably following everything as closely as he can, because one wrong move can become a PR nightmare.

This is also true to Trudeau and Biden as well.

It is what it is. I hope things settle down, and everyone comes out of this ordeal in one piece.

What's the matter Canada? Don't like the taste of your own medicine? You're just another anglo country, full of lies, deceit and duplicity!!

China deliberately took advantage of Canada’s stupidity and achieved good results.
Obviously, since China punishes Canada, other countries have not arrested the executives and citizens of Chinese companies

LOL India begs Trudeau to reinvestigate ISI role in killing of Baloch terrorist living in Canada. Trudeau couldn't deliver.

How does he know? Did Trudeau look up the Canada-based spy list? Trudeau should provide the list to China to prove their innocence.

I wish the same but if any one or both of them committed a crime then I wish Punishment gets them both. One thing west is getting a hard time swallowing is that China is now too big of a Power to be bullied. China is not some Poor Middle Eastern, South American, or African country to which the West can twist arms and force submission. The sooner West realizes this, learn to share Power with the Chinese the better it will be for world peace.
