Are you sure those components have no Chinese alternatives? Equipment wise, not 100% but chip wise, Huawei can produce their own chips. The question here we still need to pay patent fees, producing it is not a problem, owning the patent, that's the problem. Even Qualcomm is paying patent fees to ARM. It was only when SMIC hired a famed Taiwanese engineer (can't recall the name) that things looked brighter. This engineer had worked in TSMC and Samsung in senior positions. For the first time, I am thinking that SMIC may indeed deliver on 14nm FinFET tech this year.

Personally to say, China can retaliate for the worst scenario.

1,Give up oversea markets for high end products that use US technologies. We can survive because China itself is big market that is enough to sustain our high end companies to thrive. And China can still export low end products+ middle end products+ high end products that don't rely on US. The former two would be still very competitive in world market.

2, Stop importing US chips. Ban all products that contain US chips and other chips that can not supply Chinese companies under US pressure in China market. China consumes world 60% chip. This ban will hurt US chip makers and help our domestic chip makers.

3, If things go worse, China will use all its tools to attack US in the world economically, politically and militarily.

There is little we can do? there is alot we can do, for one start using Chinese components, now there is no more pressure to open up a level playing field. It's not taht we don't have equivalent components, some components are less efficient or more expensive due to process issues. Start using those, at least they are 100% local. The private industry has less incentive to go for lesser known local brands because it's profit driven, not country driven.

ARM is a licensor, we know how to make the chip but we need to pay license for their patents. They are used because they are popular, but for domestic market we can use our own ISAs like UNITY and SHENWEI. We will never give up and suck up to US like Indian poodles. You want to be their poodle go ahead, but don't put down other people's effort so you can feel better about your own failures.

Yeah...I do. We did not 'handed' you semiconductor technologies (plural) in the sense that we gave it away for nothing. We 'handed' the tech to you from obeying many of your laws that forced US companies to partner with yours. The word 'handed' here is rhetorical but it is essentially true. EVERYTHING that is China's modern semiconductor industry came from Western sources.

OK. They did solve one issue with CZ-3A though, Loral engineers helped us with the solution and it became a big h00hah, then they ban us from launching US sats. Else we would have monopolize their launch business. But it triggered us to develop fully non-US component satellites and today we export them. Alot of their actions are reactions to Chinese progress. I believe the 93 incident was cause by the ULA lobby, they didn't want to lose launch businesses.
