"NEW DELHI -- The Indian unit of Toyota Motor Corp. will recall about 40,000 units of its Etios sedan and Liva hatchback cars made until Oct. 8 for possible cracks in their hose pipe and fuel pipe.

It will inspect the cars made since their launch, Sandeep Singh, deputy managing director of marketing at Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd., told Dow Jones Newswires over the phone Thursday. "We noticed the fault on our own and, as a precautionary step, we are voluntarily inspecting the cars."

These faults don't pose any "immediate" safety threats, he added.

Toyota launched the Etios sedan in December last year and the hatchback, based on the same platform, in June.

"Our dealers are contacting customers to get their cars inspected. We are in no hurry to complete this exercise and we'll inspect the cars as and when customers bring them to the showrooms," Mr. Singh said.

He didn't disclose the cost of the recall.

Demand for the two models, sold with both diesel and gasoline engines, has been outstripping supplies since introduction, helping the company to expand its share in the Indian market. Local sales of Toyota vehicles surged 89% in the April-November period of this financial year through March to 92,546 vehicles, most of which were Etios and Liva.

Toyota was hit by a global recall crisis in 2010, but the models sold in India were never affected. But, now it joins the Indian units of Honda Motor Co. and Suzuki Motor Corp., which have in the past year recalled cars to replace faulty parts.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. had in April this year recalled 13,157 units of diesel cars manufactured between Nov. 13 and Dec. 4 in 2010, to inspect a defective part. That followed a similar move of February last year when it recalled more than 100,000 units of its small car A-Star to replace a defective part in the fuel tank.

Honda Siel Cars India has had three recalls in India in the recent past, the latest being in September this year to replace power window switches on 72,115 City sedans manufactured between 2005 and 2007.

Tata Motors Ltd., India's biggest auto maker by revenue, offered additional safety equipment on its Nano minicar in November last year after some incidents of the car catching fire. The company maintained the actions didn't constitute a recall."

Recalls happen almost every year, even in the US there were many recalls last year and couple of years ago all related to safety. It will most likely affect Toyota's reputation India a bit, but not going to harm the the over all sale that much.
