India urges media blackout of planned Koran burning

NEW DELHI — India, home to the world's third-biggest Muslim population, called Thursday for the US to take "strong action" to prevent a planned Koran burning ceremony and demanded a media blackout.

A small Florida church headed by pastor Terry Jones plans to torch the Islamic holy book on Saturday's anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks despite global outrage and calls from American leaders to abandon the event.

Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram, in a strongly worded statement after a cabinet meeting, condemned the "deplorable act" that was "obviously calculated to increase bitterness and strife between religious groups."

"We hope the US authorities will take strong action to prevent such an outrage being committed," he said.

"While we await the actions of the US authorities we appeal to the media, both print and visual media, to refrain from telecasting visuals or publishing photographs of this deplorable act."

Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Thursday also urged his US counterpart Barack Obama to intervene and stop the ceremony.

India has the world's third-largest Muslim population after Indonesia and Pakistan, calculated to number 160 million in a recent study by the US-based Pew Research centre.

Ever anxious about communal violence, India's statement on Thursday also reflects government concern about a forthcoming court ruling on a domestic religious dispute.

In Florida, pastor Jones has indicated that he is praying for guidance on whether to go ahead with the burning event after warnings from US Afghanistan commander General David Petraeus and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

You guys do know that Indians have regularly burned the Quran...

You guys do know that Indians have regularly burned the Quran...

Yes some, extremist elements in India might have done that, just like some extremist elements in Pakistan have perverted its message and use it as a tool to recruit suicide bombers.

Seriously Asim, what the hell was the point of that post, aside from trolling?

When India doesn't control its own media from broadcasting images of burning the Quran, what business does India have telling the US to do a media blackout?

India likes to cash in, and its just cashing in as appearing to be a very civilized well mannered kid, when it probably has done the most amount of Quran burning than any other country.

They don't spare a minute to burn the Quran.

U.S. Embassy Condemns Church Plans To Burn Copies Of the Koran

Islamabad, September 08, 2010 — The U.S. Embassy condemns plans by a Florida church to burn hundreds of copies of the Koran on the anniversary of 9/11.

“We condemn acts that are disrespectful, intolerant and divisive,” said Charge d’Affaires Stephen C. Engelken. “We are deeply concerned about all deliberate attempts to offend members of any religious or ethnic group.”

“We believe firmly in freedom of religion and freedom of expression; they are universal rights, enshrined in the U.S. Constitution and in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We reaffirm our position that the deliberate destruction of any holy book is an abhorrent act, said Engelken.”

Officials in Gainesville, Florida, where the church is located, denied the church’s permit for the burning under the local fire ordinance and have said they will take further steps if the Church goes forward with its plans.

Public condemnation of this event has come from a variety of organizations including the National Association of Evangelicals, the Southern Baptist Convention and the Anti-Defamation League.

As she hosted an Iftar meal at the State Department in Washington Tuesday evening, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton welcomed the condemnation of the planned act, saying “I am heartened by the clear, unequivocal condemnation of this disrespectful, disgraceful act that has come from American religious leaders of all faiths, from evangelical Christians to Jewish rabbis, as well as secular U.S. leaders and opinion-makers. Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. Many of you know that in 1790, George Washington wrote to a synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island, that this country will give ‘to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.’”

Have you ever watched the Indian media covering Quran burnings? They show it in a negative light, and it isn't broadcast around the world like when USA burns it. SO the implications are different.

And Asim, lets not go into the records of the number of times Pakistanis have burned the American flag or insulted USA. So by that same logic of yours, you should just shut up and take it. good thing the world doesn't operate by your logic.

India and Indians stand behind condemning this act. If you have a problem with it, file a complaint to your external affairs department asking them to condemn our condemnation. :P

Bad elements are there in all societies. Trying to incite violence. Some burn koran, some burn indian flags. Some do it does not mean we support it. That is why we have a secular rule. If there is proof they will be put behind bars for inciting communal violence. If you are rich u can drag the case for long of course but certainly he will suffer.

Regularly ehh? Might have been useful if you had posted some facts along with that cryptic unsubstantiated accusation.

BTW, "regularly" as in how regularly Muslims have been killing Muslims in Islamic Pakistan?

PS: You are digressing from topic. If you really want to highlight the supposedly "Indian Quran burning" I suggest you start a new thread.

H.E. Ekonomos Fr. Nabil D. Haddad , Executive Director of The Jordanian Interfaith Coexistence Research Center (JICRC) In an interview tonight on Jordanian television said:

This priest who does not know the Arabic language . . Do not know the content of the Holy Koran . . This priest who claims to Christianity . . must educate himself Arabic And read the Holy Quran To know that in this book of love and peace that can not preach for each recipe

We Christians in Jordan, more angry than our Muslim brothers . . . Because this man who claims to be Christian to have hurt us and our religion . . These Western churches have to learn one thing . . . That Christianity is written on it . . .Made in Jordan . . Made in Arab World . . Christ sent here . . Christ Lived here . . and From here Christianity came

Question

If Muslims rightly want people to condemn Terry Jones, for he is insensitive to the sensitivities of Muslims, however can Muslims themselves understand that building a 911 mosque/community center is also being reckless and cruel towards the sensitivity of others when majority of New Yorks Residence oppose this construction?
