Top Chinese researcher’s move to US sparks soul-searching in China

People are making a big deal over the departure of one scientist from one country to another. This happens all the time; and will continue to happen. It's also interesting people are looking at this through the prism of nationalism. Science knows no boundaries.

.
China wants to accept foreign talents. But most foreign talents can not acquire China's nationality. This is quite different with America. Luckily China can make almost all progresses in science by Chinese themselves or at least ethnic Chinese.
In fact, China looks a little compulsively sick in pursuing blood purity. I bet you never saw any non-Chinese athletes in Chinese teams in any match. For me it's a good thing. It means Chinese are proud and competitive in everything.
Think of this, what would happen if America loses the power to steal talents from other counties? It would be a disaster. The same question for China? It's nothing.

Yep, China is quite like Japan in this aspect. The foreigners they want to attract are at most ethnic Chinese living outside China.

As I know, Japan has many non-Japanese athletes. There are many Chinese and Koreans(Japan citizens) working in Japan's research institutions.

immigration of a single scientist is a cause of worry for World largest economy. like seriously?

‘Goddess scientist’ Nieng Yan, once touted as a key example of Beijing’s success in luring back talent, is returning to Princeton University

Yan Nieng is not only China's but the world's top structural biologist.

Western media should respectfully learn to put Chinese names in their proper alignment. Westerners put their Christian name before their surnames, but the Chinese put their surnames in front. All Chinese and East Asians should insist on having their surnames in front as otherwise its disrespectful, unless they are using a Christian name together with their surname.
Nieng Yan sound so ridiculous.

True.

They can't tell which is the name or the surname.

Good points. I like seeing ethnic Chinese winning, not like western countries way of purchasing athletes just for winning.

China is for Chinese and stays chinese.

how is this news? thousands of people move from USA to china and thousands move from china to USA on a daily basis.

Time to seek new pastures and fresh air. She could also be a bit peeved that she is not accorded Prima Donna treatment as evident in the 2 year delay in getting project funds. China is a land of many talents and she cannot expect the same level of adulation she received in the US.
China should be thankful that she has contributed 10 of her prime productive years and may return later. China is still a developing country and may prefer to invest in projects that has more immediate and tangible commercial benefits rather than ego boosting and record breaking "high-risk research".

One person taking a tenure in US = soul searching? Some of my most successful high school classmates moved back to China once they graduated in Canada to pursue their dreams. Does that mean Canada has soul searching to do?

Movement of talents is a universal occurrence. Quit being so dramatic about it.

My dear Chinese countrymen.
Calm down.
Pls no nationalism.
We Chinese are sensible. Science grows in the soil of sense.
There are do some problems with the research environment in China science and Technology sphere.
Not a big deal and no need to cover , let alone be angry.
Our system of High-lev eduction and science research was established in the model of former soviet union's, although there have been lots of innovations over dozens of years after we begun to interact with westerners,so something unsuitable for modern science development do exists , and i am sure about it.

But China is a developing country, which means that we need to develop a lot of things including better research environment and more efficient management of funding for science and technology research.

Problems will be solved on the premise that they are found.

How many problems have we Chinese solved since we started to reform and open our nation in 1978 ?

Regarding pollution, it is a really severe problem China face right now.
But such a problem is inevitable during the process of industrialization of any country ,for example, UK ,US ,Germany.
They succeeded in solving these problems in the end , so does China and even better and sooner ,cause we could learn a lot from their experience of dealing with pollution just the same as learning their experience of industrialization.

So we should be open-minded and take any advice and criticism from Chinese or foreigners as soon as they are sincere and what they propose is real and helpful.

Now it is times of globalization not only in the sphere of economy but talents .
Let us do our best to improve our charm to attract high-talented man resource just the same as we have done to attract capital from across the world.
