5th districk in Saigon is small chinatown in Vietnam. Hua Chinese have been living there from long time ago when they escaped from famine in China to Vietnam..

I have been Saigon many times for business trip. Basically Saigon is sinking. Saigon is few place on earth where water gush out from drain every 1700, under the bright sun, in CBD area.

Vietnam needs to hire Chinese engineer to come out with a solution.

Thanks for kind Vietnamese received them. Actually they moved to Vietnam not because of famine, because they didn't want to surrender to the new dynasty. They have a saying: shame of being people of northern dynasty, would rather be as a guest in southern nation. They are Minh Hương, means people of Ming dynasty.
At that time, Siam want to receive them too, want them to help Siamese king conquer Khmer territory. But they didn't want to get involved into the local conflict, refused and stayed in southern Vietnam.

Actually the democratic Viet govt asked them to come because they needed investment. They came, developed Vietnam, employed local Vietnamese. In 1976, after South Viet collapsed many of these people were forced into labour camps, most fled, their shops and houses were looted. That is how Vietnamese thank their savior.

Actually the obvious differences occured between Minh Hương and Vietnamese very in later period, anyway I can't point fingers at Vietnamese own policy but for hundred of years in the past both Minh Huong and Kinh didn't have such man-made conflicts.
Check the following fotos, try to differentiate what they wear, one is Ming dynasty's officer clothes( old painting ), one is Dai Nam dynasty's officer clothes( old silver picture):

Wrong! the Minh Huong assimilated long time ago. Trinh Hoai Duc, a Nguyen Dynasty mandarin died long time ago and he is Minh Huong descendant, that says Minh Huong people were his ancestors that already 300 years ago when the Minh Huong arrived to Southern Vietnam that before the French colonize Vietnam, about the time Manchus established Qing Dynasty.

400k of 1.1 mill Chinese mostly Chinese migrated to Vietnam during the Qing Dynasty, and or Chinese the French brought to Vietnam during Qing Dynasty to work at rubber plantation. The Chinese of the Qing Dynasty we called them Nguoi Nha Thanh to differentiate with Minh Huong people aka Nguoi Nha Minh. Vietnamese called Chinese people by the name of their dynasty. The Chinese aka nguoi Tau, nguoi Trung Quoc are the name for the modern Chinese.

You Chinese don't even know your People history correctly, ah I forgot the Chinese now is the version of rape of Mongol and Manchus, a little bit different. Chinese version 2 I guess :D is iOS verison 9 coming up.

This is a very interesting history. Do you know the moment the late Ming dynasty descendants met with Qing dynasty Chinese migration, what they thought of and talked about with each other? This unique scene couldn't happen in China, you know, it pasted about 300 years.

How could we know correctly about them at that time? One war after another war, most communication might be difficulty.

Chinese escaped to Vietnam by boats, so we called them " Người Tàu", the boat people, I think you know that.
