Hashimoto Seiko, president of the Tokyo organising committee: "Following the challenges of the first ever postponement in Olympic history, the Tokyo 2020 Games finally open here today. Hopes have been connected one by one by many hands, and we are now in a position to welcome this day.

"The whole world has faced immense challenges with COVID-19. I would like to express my gratitude and respect to all essential workers including those in medical services and others around the world who have shown such determination in overcoming these challenges.

"I would also like to offer my thanks to the people of Japan for hosting the Games, as well as to the International Olympic Committee, the Government of Japan, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and other organisations for working so hard to make them happen."

Team USA is led by Sue Bird and Eddy Alvarez, who carried the national flag during the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Eddy Alvarez was selected by his fellow athletes to be one of Team USA's flag bearers. He won a silver medal in speed skating at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi and is competing on the U.S. baseball team in Tokyo. Alongside him holding the flag was Olympics veteran Sue Bird, who is on the U.S. women's basketball team.

There will be a record 339 medal events held across 33 sports, with five new sports - and 34 new events in total - added to the Tokyo 2020 programme by the IOC.

Some 48.8% of athletes competing at the Tokyo Olympics are women - a record figure. The five new sports are karate, skateboarding, sport climbing, baseball/softball and surfing. Baseball and softball technically aren't 'new' sports on the Olympic programme, but they haven't been contested at a Games since Beijing 2008.

New events have been introduced to the boxing, canoe slalom, canoe sprint, cycling, rowing and swimming programmes, while there are new mixed-gender events including a 4x100m mixed medley relay in swimming and a mixed relay in triathlon.

Team USA was commonly led by their NBA players, but their recent back-to-back losses to Nigeria & Australia in exhibition games (Basketball) probably told 'em to take a backseat this year.

Looking at their Roster, this may be the first time i'm seeing guys being added to the team that aren't even All-Stars. I won't be surprised if they don't get the Gold this year in that sport.
