Tokyo Olympic 2021: Discussion and Update

It's a lucky "8" Olympics for China.

38 can be thought of as 888. Game ended on 08/08. China bagged 88 medals total.

Can't say the same for US (100 + thirteen total) nor Japan (85 = 8+5 = 13).

.doesn't work like that. numba #2 and #3 are losers. you know this man. stop it. c'mon.. :D lolz

Think what you want. I've said it 3 times already yet you keep tossing it aside like it means nothing without showing a shred of proof. In the meantime, I've shown you that statistically, the country that leads in total amount of medals would also be scoring very high in gold as well. The scenario that someone brought up of 50 silvers and no gold is absurd and you and he knows it. The US and even China are the best examples of that but obviously more so the US with a very evenly distributed count of all the medals but also with the highest gold count only by 1, mind you, and to its biggest rival in the great nation of China which makes it even sweeter. Some like you folks would claim this is the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat but that couldn't be further from the truth.

China should be SUPER PROUD of its achievements as it has performed record performances in certain events that will stay as records for decades to come. That is no easy task. That's also one of MANY accomplishments you Chinese folks can take with you from this terrific Olympics instead of crying unfair and bias and claiming only gold is the winner! You people have won so much more than just gold it's right in front of your eyes that Xi Jinping should be VERY PROUD of every single Chinese competitor in this event.

But why in sports of China's strength, like weightlifting, numbers of athletes sent by each countries are limited to maximum 4 while in sports of US strength, like swimming, no such limits are imposed?

Did you bother to find out what the reasons were? Maybe you should look into that first, Beijing instead of just assuming foul play, my friend. It's about introducing new events while keeping the number of athletes at the same so they don't get overwhelmed, not because they have a vendetta against China!! That's ridiculous since China would not be the only one affected by that but rather all the weightlifters, even if they don't win as much as China.

Why China can't send as many weighlifters as she wishes? weightlifting is also one of the most popular sport and exercise in the world.
Do you mean countries can't find enough weighlifters to join this event? Are you serious?

Never said that. I just told you to look into the reason why they did what they did with weightlifting and it was also to balance the gender equality. You know times are a changing, my friend and we all need to get on the bus despite how we feel about these social issues that will undoubtedly permeate these sports events. Other sports receiving reductions to athlete quotas to reach gender balance include Rowing, Sailing, Shooting and Wrestling.

Oh, and if you were curious, the five new sports at the 2020 Olympic Games are Sport Climbing, Skateboard, Karate, Baseball/Softball and Surf. 3-on-3 basketball and BMX Freestyle Park (cycling) are two of the 15 new events.

The different between China and USA is getting smaller, only 2 Gold medals

I think it is due to the regulation made by weighlifting world body, only one representative in each competing Gold medal.

There you go, Indos and that is just one of the several reasons which the others I have listed above. But according to our Chinese friends, it's an anti-Chinese conspiracy! I really feel terrible that they feel that way because had they won, I would've been quite happy for them as their teams were some of the most disciplined and well-trained and physically unmatched of all the athletes there. Their diving athletes were MIND-BOGGLING like I said that tiny 14 year old scored perfect 10's in 3 different dives on her way to gold medals. Did you see that? That was probably the BEST performance by any athlete I saw this Olympic and it was a Chinese girl.

BTW, Egypt scored a Gold in women's Karate and Ahmad El Ghendy took Silver in the outdoors (or indoors I forget) pentathlon) and I bet you in Cairo they're jumping the streets and honking horns and giving out sweets and celebrating as if they won the country's independence LOL! I was very surprised at how well Egypt did all things considered and they should've won Bronze in Handball, but fell short to a better Spanish team from Spain but look at this, I along with many other Egyptians couldn't be more proud of them for coming up 4th and with no medals because that, in of itself, is a terrific accomplishment. Quite the opposite of thinking silver is nothing but the first loser! ooof, what a horrible way of looking at that.

Even women's Synchronized swimming for Egypt was breathtaking in the sense that I didn't even know they had a team competing in such a category and the finished in a very decent spot and so proud of that as well as the equestrian event. So many great things happening in these Tokyo Olympics.

It’s simple really, use a 3, 2, 1 point system to assess the overall performances of each country. An the US has thoroughly outperformed the Chinese, even with a subpar Olympics.

I'm with you, ma man, but our Chinese friends don't see it that way which is ok IMO. However, to simply discount Silver as the "first loser" and Bronze as the "2nd loser" is unbelievably skewed and ridiculous and I honestly think it's part of the cultural indoctrination that the elders try to instill in their youth that they can't see anything else as winning except for Gold which sets them up for heartbreaking disappointment. And I'm no doctor and neither do I play one on TV, but I can only imagine the stress that puts on these poor and super young athletes to perform beyond their capabilities and not be rewarded if they don't place a gold medal! I think it's terrible is so many ways. But her, I'm just a goober on PDF what does my opinion mean lmao.

Remember, the IOC tried to remove Ping Pong from the Olympic.

Chinese dominance cannot justify removal of table tennis from Olympics

Chinese dominance seems the only apparent reason for the possible removal of table tennis from the Olympics. China has won all gold medals in Olympic table tennis games except in 1992 when Swedish player Jan-Ove Waldner won the men’s singles at the Barcelona Olympic Games and in 2004 when South Korean player Ryu Seung-Min won the men's singles at the Athens Olympic Games. Even the use of larger balls and adoption of an 11-point scoring system did not change China’s overwhelming dominance in the sport.

That would be an absolute shame of the highest degree if they ever did anything remotely close to shutting down a single event in ping pong. That's one of the essential sports of the Olympics and has been for over a century if I'm not mistaken and whomever has been dominating it should have absolutely NOTHING to do with it.
actually the easiest way is to increase number of medals and athlete quotas in sports China is good at. Why do you think that swimming has 30+ medals even though there's useless events like butterfly stroke?

Have you ever tried to swim the butterfly stroke? Well I have and actually won it in my high school sporting event as a junior and I can tell you, it is one of the (if not the) most difficult swimming strokes to perform, and so the degree of difficulty makes it enticing enough to include it as a medaling event. You might disagree and you have that right I respect but I disagree completely.

i'm ok if they born in china. i don't like what the jap is doing buying well known tongans, au and nz players to join their national rugby team and make them have japanese first & last names. ridiculous.. :cheesy:

Years ago I would've agree with you because immigration should have its limits when it comes to such events where countries are represented by their athletes. BUT, since then it's been about 25 years and I have certainly changed my mind since immigration comes with a huge variety of reasons and many who perform for their new countries feel like they truly are citizens of that country and they want to represent them and so it becomes rightfully so and I've since had no issue with it whatsoever,

Too late. The challenge was immediately forwarded to the Fate Gods and they have happily accepted it.

That's freaking awesome and that is the freaking way it should be. You've watched me tout this example for the last 2 weeks or so but let's take a close look at that US tally and check out how even the medal count is across the board! Exactly what I mentioned in that if the total was the highest, it would represent all the medals in a very close count and not skewed towards the Gold by any means and THAT is what determines a true champion and not one that has only the most Gold while silver and bronze are minimal. That just doesn't make any logical or deserving sense whatsoever. Good post, Ant.

US GDP per capita is 6x China. On the day when US GDP per capita equals China... USA will have no chance.

This Olympic is probably the last one USA wins.

In the great immortal words of the late and poor Rodney King, "why can't we just all get along"? I honestly don't harbor any of thee negative sentiments towards China or any other nation for that matter and quite the contrary. I have HUUUUUGEAH respect for China and its athletes' performances in this and every Olympic as I think it's the highest standard of dicipline in the world and you can see it on their faces. But to be driven but such vitriol and hatred of the one particular foe ruins the spirit of competition to the max, IMO. I really hope this changes
Dont know why some non Chinese members here are even arguing up and down with the chinese over the US topping the medal tables.
Its actually normal for Chinese members on here to be sour and bitter, since China came second. In fact its only during the beijing games that China had more golds than the US. Which was expected since countries organizing the olympics have a big advantage since they can choose more fileds they are good in to be included in the Olympics. Reason Japan came 3rd this year ahead of us.
Anyway, the US has always topped the medals table since the beginning of the olympics, only the USSR has beaten the US in medals table(both golds and total medal counts) a few times.
If anything China has actually done well to come so close to the US in gold medals (though still a long way to go in total medal counts),eventhough they still fell short of the US at the end.
To be honest, this was actually one of the worse US performance in Olympic history. The fact that they still came up 1st even after such a bad performance shows just how deep the US talent pool/sports performance is as a country. It will ne a while for China to catch up to this. The vast gap in the total medal count says alot about this even more .

On another note, eventhough we came 4th behind Japan, we perfromed fairly well. Eventhough we had alot of disappointments in fields we are normally strong in. I was actually happy to see that our athlete's bagged medals in so many different fields from individual events to team events in so many varieties of fields. Still good to see that we remain the powerhouse of sports/olympics in Europe.

Well said, sir! 👍 👍 👍 Great Britain performed exceptionally well all around and held its head high as it should and it reminded me of this spectacular event not sure if you or others saw it? Maybe @Indos did you see this Norwegian fella shatter the record for the 1500m?

This is a perfect example for @beijingwalker talking about that one post where you said China excels at all these weightlifting events and when they cut the amount of participants, it only affected China and I replied to you that it affected everyone and here is a perfect example of that. The US, or Jamaica are not the only ones who win this event all the time, same with weightlifting you mentioned and so this incredible piece of history would've never happened had they taken this event out and it had NOTHING to do with the US.

Apparently China with a population of over a Billion has had an athlete shortage since the 2008 Olympics where they fielded 200 more athletes than in 2020.

I knew someone definitely understood what I meant when I brought that up a few pages ago but it either flew over certain members' heads or they deliberately, lol. ducked! lmfao. Pretty sure it was the latter. :D

It's coming to close ceremony. Congrats to all athletes achieved their goals and thanks for all great performances.

That's the spirit of this most terrific and great, worldly competition. Well said, my Friend!

China has weak winter sports team. Doubt China makes even top 10 at Beijing winter games.

Still makes room for growth. Good show for China in these Olympics. But yes, in the grand scheme of things the Olympics don’t really matter, especially compared to public health, which is why most of the Japanese public didn’t want the games to happen. But poor showing in winter sports may indicate Chinese military vulnerability in winter and mountain conditions.

Yes, in the history books it will mention the fortuitous #2 outcome of the China team by quickly stopping at the lucky numbers 38/88 and allowing the US to pass them with the completely tragic 39/113 combination. US newscasts are full of stories calling the US Team dumb #$%s for allowing the Chinese to trick them into this ending.

Actually Norway is the country that often dominates Winter olympics this modern day, Germany is also usually a good contender for second. So i dont think the US has mch chance of topping the medal tables. Except the US is lucky enough to jave a very good winter games. So they will need to be at their very best to stand a chance of topping medal table.

What im interested in most is seeing how China will perform since they are organizing the games for the first time ever this time. Will be interesting to see if they can be in the top 10. That will be a major achievement/breakthrough even if they come 10th.

Try convincing a group which believes that a silver medal means the first loser and actually cries and apologizes about it because he knows he'll probably be scolded for it or is afraid to be punished for not getting the gold. That way of thinking is just so ultimately sad that shame on the Chinese Olympic Authority if indeed that is what they instill on these poor athletes to make them feel like crap if they don't win the Gold. I realize that it's probably just motivation to push for their best effort to win the gold, but the chastising for placing 2nd in silver or 3rd in Bronze is absolutely ridiculous IMO!

Winter Olympic are a lot of fun especially ice hockey since the competition is wide open for that and it's usually Canada and either the US or a European country in the finals.

It'll be tough but the US should definitely be in contention for top spot. Norway, Germany, Canada, and the Dutch are very good too.
