Chinese cities look fab and all that. I have been doing some baidu street view these days and i dont find infra that great outside of cities. Even just outside. It looked a lot like India to be honest like somewhat well off south India. Only thing is that road markings are pretty good. The basic architecture is quiet bad showing poor building approval practices and perhaps corruption in local governance. How is basic infra services in china outside ofcities ? can you rely on good quality of electiricity supply, running water 24 hours, fast and cheap internet, quick restoration of facilities incase of any natural calamity ?

Medog, Chinese part of south Tibet (southern slope of the Himalaya mountains) across from Indian border
Medog, South Tibet, on the southern slope of the Himalaya mountains next to the disputed regions between China and India, is the last place being connected by roads and other modern facilities in China.
It was cut off from the rest of China by the mighty Himalaya mountains in the past, One of China's poor regions.

Our development focuses more on cities during the past 20 years, as our urban population is going to reach 70% in the following years. Our countryside is also changing very fast as farmers get richer and richer, especially in the eastern part of the country. See my thread:

BTW, Baidu street view is always out dated... A lot of things can happen in just a few years in a fast developing place like China.

Well, not perfect like korea or japan. The smaller towns have bad architecture, not that I like the architecture in the bigger cities. Will take another 20-30 years to reach Japan/Sg style architecture and planning. Even Japan urban architecture sucks compared to SG, but their countryside is awesome.

Our old HDBs actually have ugly designs as well. Fortunately there's a fresh coat of paint every 7 years.

It's only in the 1990s where we paid more attention to the aesthetics of our mass housing. You can see the difference between old towns near the city center vs Punggol/Sengkang.

The late HDB guy did the city planning for a few Chinese cities. But the problem is aesthetics, still not up to my standards. HK is nice is some area, but is dirty and unorganized. Of all countries, I like SG the best, nobody can fight SG townplanning and aesthetics, the reason being the government controls the majority of the land. China is in the same position to exploit this advantage but Chinaman taste gotta change first. I actually think Chinese townplanning is better than Taiwan. Taiwanese aesthetics is also bad.

The newer HDBs towns are generally more aesthetically pleasing (with exceptions ), but my gripe is that the newer flats are smaller than a generation ago.
They used to build HDB maisonettes. o_O
