A landmark economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) between Taiwan and China took effect Sunday, ushering in a new stage in relations across the Taiwan Strait.
While President Ma Ying-jeou's administration has repeatedly said that the ECFA will bring higher growth and more employment to the country's export-driven economy, the opposition has warned that the pact signed June 29 could adversely impact local industries and further widen Taiwan's wealth gap.
