Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS)

DHAKA, May 26 (BSS) - Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has designed a project worth Taka 228 crore to make three rivers surrounding the capital --- Buriganga, Turag and Shitalakhha---pollution free.

"Presently, the proposed project, to be implemented by GoB fund, is waiting for getting nod from Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC)," BIWTA Chairman Samsudoha Khandaker told BSS today.

Earlier, the BIWTA has conducted a pilot project to extract waste from the three kilometers riverbed of the Buriganga and one kilometer of the Turag river.

Under the pilot project, the BIWTA has extract 8.56 lakh cubic meters of waste at a cost of Taka 16.93 crore under the funding of Department of Environment, Director of the pilot project BWITA executive engineer Raqibul Islam said.

"During the pilot project, we have able to extract waste from the riverbed but not able to make the water pollution free as pollutants are mixed with the water," he said.

Islam said the BIWTA has taken this mega project to make the river water pollution free. Under the proposed project, BIWTA would buy four modern water cleaning machine at a cost of Taka 100 crore, he added.

He said initially they have chosen three spots besides the rivers as dumping points. The waste would only be dumped to that earmarked dumping points that are covered to check environment degradation.

About the pollution free rivers, Shipping Minister Advocate Shajahan Khan said the government is committed to make the Dhaka surrounding rivers pollution free.

In line with the government's commitment, we are taking such kind of project to ensure a livable environment for the Dhaka dwellers.

Meanwhile in a seminar in the capital today, Water Resources Minister Ramesh Chandra Sen said imitative has been taken to bring water of the Jamuna River to the Buringanga River for reducing its (Buriganga River) pollution.

The water of the Jamuna River would be channeled to Buriganga through dredging 162 kilometre of the Pouli, the Dhaleshwari, the Bongshai and the Turag rivers, he said.

The minister said dredging has already been completed from hard point in Sirajganj of the Jamuna river to the Dhaleswari river for increasing water flow of these rivers.

Bangladesh Water Integrality Network (BAWIN) organized the seminar with the support of Transparency International Bangladesh at BIAM Auditorium here.

Deputy Managing Director of Dhaka WASA SDM Quamrul Alam Chowdhury spoke as the special guest while TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman moderated the discussion.

The speakers of the seminar put emphasis on increasing use of surface water instead of ground water as the water level of the capital is going down day by day due to excessive use.
