Tk.1,330/ton Transit Fee Proposed for Indian Goods

Thats also my question... most of the infrastructure that will be built which people of BD will hardly use... this is a pure waste of money... Yes you are right ... even generating 7000-8000 MW of electricity with that amount will yield more better result... But even in power Hasina is giving Indian company 3.4 billion dollar power plant contract including rifgt to operate without tender...
Can someone explain to me the sentence in bold. Who else will use infrastructure in BD if not the BDeshis. And how dense must a person be to say, investing in infrastructure is 'waste of money'.

Am I reading it right or am I too stoned?

^ The tar or the concrete roads laid in BD is of no use to certain people whose preferred mode of transport is zooming in a car on a Canadian Freeway.

Simple what "most of the infrastructure that will be built which people of BD will hardly use... " I think sami was trying to around about mean was the OPPORTUNITY COST implication of spending $7 plus billion dollars on this access route. When this amount would better utilised in other projects like, power (our industries are grinding to a halt due to lack in power), gridlocked transport network in and around dhaka, education, sanitation, health etc. Instead of building this road and rail network which the vast majority of Bangladeshis will never use.

more important where will we get the money? Almost 7% of our GDP, would you spend 7% of your GDP to help us, i doubt it.

Road and Highway department of Bangladesh, annual budget is about 750 Million USD. I doubt they are going to construct infrastructure worth 7 Billion dollars just for transits sake. As I have said earlier in this thread, this transit arrangement is only a temp arrangement. So they won't need to spend the 7 Billions dollars.

COOL, then no need for this transit agreement.

Dont quote something without complete knowledge to it. No new road and extension of roads, widening of roads, new land acquirement are included in this annual R&H budget. This budget only includes paying stuff salaries and routine maintenance of roads. YOu think 3.5 billion dollar padma bridge included in the R&H budget?

We need all the roads specially all the roads needs be of 4 lane to be of international standard and India is paying nothing to build them. Transit is a complete different issue. If Indians are willing to pay the cost for plying their goods then thats welcome. I believe our truckers will get some business out of it even though thats very nominal compared to the dommestic market. If they are not up to paying the cost then just dont allow them with any transit whatsover. Thats my understanding.

Sorry what was that again?

Unfortunately that still does not describe the open toilet phenomenon.
Even Botswana has per-capita income of $15,450

so what?

You see, India is an old culture and it is their culture not to shy to relieve in under- the-sky toilets. THe civilized world should learn from and follow Indian way of living!

A very poor attempt at deflection. The question was why would infrastructure in BD be 'hardly' used by BDeshis and you are giving me a and bull story about opportunity cost. What has the later got to do with the former.

Regarding opportunity cost, there is always more than one way of spending money. If not this, then that. If not that then something else. But never before have I come across a nincompoop so dense as to think that building roads, bridges or broadening existing roads is all a waste of money, and then defend this impossibly ridiculous proposition citing opportunity cost.

That is another debate.

The Mongla post needs to be modernized for India, Nepal, and Bhutan. These guys need to pay for the cost of doing all those work. What if they don't use the port that often, we are going to be stuck with that for a long time.
