CM accuses Opposition leaders of trying to disrupt communal harmony for political gains
Using the Tipu Jayanti platform to again criticise the top BJP leadership in the State, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday accused them of trying to disrupt communal harmony to gain in the coming Assembly elections.
Speaking at a function at the Vidhana Soudha here, he said, “Leaders who had praised Tipu in the past are today criticising him because elections are approaching. Is it fair to criticise Tipu for votes?”
Continuing his tirade, he said, “Leader of the Opposition Jagadish Shettar, while being the Chief Minister, had eulogised Tipu in the preface for a book on Tipu written by historian Sheikh Ali. BJP president and former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, while leading the KJP, had praised Tipu. The former Deputy Chief Minister R. Ashok and Union Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda had all praised Tipu. Today, they are inciting hatred and communal feeling of people.”
He said these leaders should have changed their mindset after at least hearing President Ram Nath Kovind praising Tipu as a tall freedom fighter. “Instead, they stooped to accuse us of writing his (the President’s) speech,” he added. Urging the BJP leaders not to view Tipu through communal lens, the Chief Minister said: “
Karnataka is the land of saints, dasas and sufis, and it is the land of Basavanna and Kuvempu too. People are aware of what is right and wrong, and are capable of understanding.”
Comparing Tipu with Emperor Ashoka, he said violence cannot be judged out of context. “In Kodagu, people talk about Tipu being a murderer. There could have been violence and killing when Tipu was expanding his kingdom. But Tipu cannot be termed communal for that.”

BJP minority unit president Franklin Monterio taken into custody, released
Except for an attempt by a Bharatiya Janata Party activist to enter the venue, the Tipu Jayanti was celebrated in a peaceful manner at the Zilla Panchayat auditorium here on Friday.
The police were in good numbers at the function venue. Apart from the main entrance, the police were placed on the narrow roads leading to the auditorium. While private vehicles were made to park outside the venue, only government vehicles were allowed to the function venue. When BJP district minority unit president Franklin Monterio made an attempt to break the cordon, the police took him into custody and released him later in the day.
Inaugurating Tipu Jayanti, district in-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai said that he was pained over the way Tipu Sultan was being decried. Mr. Rai said that Tipu Sultan has protected several temples and has been a symbol of communal harmony.
Mr. Rai said that historians in the past have stated facts and mentioned events related to Tipu Sultan without adding any colour. It was unfortunate that historians now are trying to twist facts and show Tipu Sultan in a bad light. “History always remains history, even when attempts are made to twist it,” he said. Taunting State BJP B.S. Yeddyurappa, Mr. Rai said, “Those who wore turbans and held swords in the past were now opposing Tipu Jayanti.”
Writer Arvind Chokkady said that Tipu Sultan fought hard against the British and refused to accept slavery.
It was Rani Abbakka who first raised voice against slavery between 1525 and 1570. Tipu Sultan carried the fight against the British to greater heights during his rule, more so between 1792 and 1799.

Vinay Kumar Sorake, MLA, said on Friday that Tipu Sultan was a freedom fighter who had fought against the British.
He was speaking after inaugurating Tipu Jayanti function organised by the district administration and the Department of Kannada and Culture at the District Offices Complex Hall, which was held amid tight security, here. He also released a booklet “Mysuru Huli Tipu Sultan” brought out by the Department of Information on the occasion.
Mr. Sorake said that a few years ago, when the State government began celebrating Tipu Jayanti, there were hardly any protests. But they had intensified in the last two years only because of political reasons and also because the Assembly elections were approaching.
It was essential that all communities lived in harmony with one another in the country. It was with that intention that the Pejawar seer had held an Iftaar in the Anna Brahma Hall of Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple complex a few months ago.
Even that was criticised by some forces. These forces were trying to divide society and portray the minority communities in a poor light.
It was the philanthropist and founder of Corporation Bank, Haji Abdulla Saheb (1882-1935), who had provided camphor for the Lakshadeepotsava of Sri Krishna Mutt when there was heavy rain in the temple town.
Such incidents of harmony and peaceful co-existence should not be forgotten. It was the duty of all countrymen to remember those who had fought for the Independence of the country, Mr. Sorake said.
Delivering a special lecture, K. Phaniraj, writer, said that it was Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan who were responsible for giving interest free loans to farmers. They had also improved the irrigation system of the region under their control to help farmers.
They were responsible for the development of tanks in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. They were responsible for bringing in the system of weights and measures. They introduced accounting in the granaries of the State.
It was the dream of Tipu Sultan to build a federation of states in the country. Hence, he had a tie-up with the French and obtained rocket technology. He was inspired by the French Revolution and called himself “Citizen Tipu”, Prof. Phaniraj said.
Meenakshi Bannanje, president of the Udupi City Municipal Council, Priyanka Mary Francis, Deputy Commissioner, and others were present.
