Jnanpith awardee Girish Karnad on Tuesday said 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan would have enjoyed the same status as of Maratha king Chhatrapathi Shivaji, if he was a Hindu and not a Muslim.

In another remark that stoked a controversy, Karnad said it would have been “apt” had the Bengaluru International Airport at Devanahalli near here been named after Tipu Sultan rather than Kempegowda, a feudatory ruler under the erstwhile Vijayanagara Empire which founded Bengaluru in 1537.

The remarks by the noted Kannada playwright and actor came at a state government organised function to mark the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan held amid tight security at the state Secretariat in the presence of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

The statewide celebrations are being boycotted by BJP and protested by several outfits who see the ruler of the erstwhile Mysore kindgom as a “religious bigot” and “anti-Kannadiga.” The protests led to violence at Madikeri in Kodagu district claiming one life.

“I feel that if Tipu Sultan was a Hindu and not Muslim he would have attained the position in Karnataka that Shivaji Maharaj enjoys in Maharashtra,” Karnad said.

Maintaining that Tipu is deprived of such a status owing to his religious persuasion, he said, “Because what has happened is today our scholars and politicians look at one’s religion and caste first....”

“Injustice has happened to Tipu Sultan because of this type of evaluation...” he added.

Taking potshots at those calling Tipu Sultan “anti-Kannada and anti-Hindu”, Karnad said, “Today, when we are celebrating this day as Deepawali and Tipu Sultan day, we can also celebrate it as Bihar day.”

His Bihar day remark was an apparent jibe at BJP, which was routed in the Assembly polls. Karnad has always made known his ideological opposition to BJP.

Expressing similar opinion to that of Karnad while recounting the contributions of Tipu Sultan to the people of his kingdom, Siddaramaiah said “...if he was born as Hindu he would have got similar respect in Karnataka and the entire country, that Shivaji enjoys.”

And status APJ Abdul Kalam would have enjoyed, had he been a Hindu and NOT a Muslim? Just imagine...

And had Tipu been a Hindu would he have forcibly converted Muslims or slaughtered them or destroyed their mosques??? The devil is in the details smarty pants!

What silly Hinduphobic BS by a known hindu baiter. Shivaji is admired for his noble deeds, not just military prowess. The stories we hear of him, includes one in which Kalyan's Subedar's daughter in law was captured along with treasury by his top general and presented as a gift to Shivaji.

As per Islam that very pretty girl was war booty. ( rem what was done to daughters of raja dahir by a non hindu hero? ) Shivaji, seeing her beauty exclaimed ... aah, had my mother been so beautiful, I also could have been born good looking...

hearing this the general was so ashamed... and then Shivaji gave a copy of Quran to the girl as a sign that she was pure and untouched and sent her back to the Subedar of Kalyan.

This is why Shivaji is revered. He is not known to have destroyed Mosques or forcibly converted or slaughtered Muslims and Christians. Shivaji is admired for the qualities that we as a nation today want to develop.

Just making such a sensationalist Hinduphobic rant without the FACTS is fashionable now.... its getting tiring.

Tippu is not shivaji, tippu was a tyrant, and he was a religious bigot unlike shivaji who looked upon everyone as equal, shivajis artillery commander was a Muslim and a maratha, unlike tippu who never encouraged local language and culture, he encouraged Persian, and many people did not like it, even local Muslims, he was forgotten until a serial called the "sword of tippu sultan" was telecast in DD produced by sanjay khan, and vijay mallya bought his sword from sothbys in england, tippu was as dark as charcoal, unlike he was portrayed in the serial  and what is his contributions in the improvement in the life of the people who lived under him, he was just a war monger, and a bad administrator.

Shivaji is known for his religious tolerance, while Tipu is known for the opposite.

However, that should not under-play his role against the British.

Yeah, stupid to compare the two. Tipu was undoubtedly brave & his fight with the British did set him apart from many other kings. However there is no getting away from the atrocities that were committed in Coorg, coastal Karnataka & Kerala.

He was a far more complex & controversial character than Shivaji ever was. Makes no sense comparing the two.

Funnily, since Tipu is famous for fighting the British invaders, does it mean that Karnad is suggesting that Shivaji's fight against the Mughals was of a similar character? Freudian slip? :)

Another typical chacha secular anti Hindu politico-religious bigot.

He is lucky that most Indians are too coward to act rationally to what he says.

He was a Jihadi Ghazi. He claimed himself to be no less.
