Tibetan soldier sets record, Climbs 8th highest peak without oxygen

DHARAMSHALA, September 30: A Tibetan soldier from 7 Vikas of the Indian Army scaled Mt. Manaslu, the 8th highest peak in the world as part of the Indian Army Mt. Manaslu Expedition 2011.
Kunchok Tenpa, an everester, set the record by climbing the 8163 metre-high peak, known in Tibetan as Kutang, without using oxygen.
The expedition group was flagged off from the Indian capital on March 24 and successfully scaled the mountain summit on May 9.
Speaking to Phayul, Kunchok Tenpa said that he almost failed in his mission to scale the mountain without oxygen when he crossed the 8000 metre mark.
"Yet my team members' encouragement and support injected in me the strength to carry on and finally complete my dream to climb the mountain without using oxygen," said Tenpa.
The expedition was the first Indian Expedition Team to have successfully summited Mt. Manaslu which is considered "the 4th most dangerous 8000m peak for its harsh terrain and the inclement weather.
After completing the expedition, the group met with Indian Defence Minister A K Antony, Chief of the Army Staff VK Singh and other top army officials.
The Defence Minister asked me where I am from and I proudly told him that I am from Tibet, Tenpa told Phayul on phone.
"As a Tibetan soldier under Indian authority, one can't do much for Tibet, but I perform my duties as a Tibetan ambassador in the Indian army, Tenpa said.
Reaching the summit of the mountain, Tenpa raised the Tibetan national flag and placed a photo of His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the top of the mountain that he was carrying with him.
Kunchok Tenpa is a veteran of conquering high peaks and had stood third in the famous Mt. Everest Marathon in 2008.
