Tibet to have 5 airports by year's end

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) announced yesterday that by the end of 2010, the Tibet Autonomous Region will five civilian airports.

According to Wang Shunchang, deputy director of CAAC, the expansion and reconstruction project of Shigatse airport and Lhasa airport are still in progress, and will be put into service before 2011.

The air traffic volume in Tibet has witnessed drastic growth. In 2009, the ascent and descent times of civil aircraft, passenger volume and air cargo volume in Tibet airports have risen 44 percent, 61percent and 32 percent, respectively, which surpassed the domestic average.

So far, the Tibet Autonomous Region has six airlines operating 16 domestic and international routes with more than 200 fixed flights weekly.
