- The Five Fingers of Tibet is a Chinese foreign policy that considers Tibet to be the palm of China’s right hand
- The five fingers on its periphery are Ladakh, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, and Arunachal Pradesh
- Beijing believes it is its responsibility to “liberate” these regions
After “occupying” Tibet, China is now trying hard to take “Five Fingers”, Lobsang Sangay, president of the Central Tibetan Administration, claimed, adding that China’s expansionist policies are nothing but a threat to the world.
“Tibet occupation was just the beginning. You saw the Galwan incident, how many soldiers lost their lives. Tibet is just a beginning as it is the palm but five fingers are still out there which Chinese CPC (Chinese Communist Party) is trying hard to get,” Lobsang said.
He was addressing an event organised by the Centre for Democracy, Pluralism and Human Rights (CDPHR).
The top Tibetan leader said that losing Tibet as a buffer zone between India and China has cost India dearly in terms of border issues.
The Five Fingers of Tibet is a Chinese foreign policy that considers Tibet to be the palm of China’s right hand, with five fingers on its periphery – Ladakh, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, and Arunachal Pradesh, and Beijing believes it is its responsibility to “liberate” these regions.
“India needs to understand, what is happening in Tibet is the blueprint and it is happening in Xinjiang and Hong Kong. Understand China and deal with it. Pluralism is the foundation of India. Pluralism and diversity binds India together, human rights and freedom binds India together but China is bringing a more autocratic system so for Asia - development with democracy and diversity is better than the Chinese model,” Lobsang added.
He charged that the Chinese government, in the name of poverty alleviation, is employing mainland Chinese people in minority regions such as Tibet. As a result, an environment is being created there that might lead to endangering the Tibetan identity.
“Not authoritarian policies of China but democratic policies for development that respect diversity is what the world needs,” he said, according to news agency PTI.
The Central Tibetan Administration is dismissive of China’s claim to the position of the Dalai Lama and has on Friday said that whatever Beijing decides on the post will be “duplicate”.
“The Chinese government has zero role as far as reincarnation of the Dalai Lama is concerned. They can’t interfere. Whatever they do will be a duplicate. We are original,” Lobsang said.
The Dalai Lama is the spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhists.
