Three more container terminals at Ctg. port soon

.
what is total handling capacity by all ports in Bangladesh.
Its hard to find latest info regarding this. Latest I was able to find is Chittagong port handled around 43 million tonnes of cargos and additional 1.5 million tonnes of containers in 2011. Can't find anything about Mongla port.

Port Overview:
Chittagong Port is considered the heart of the economy of Bangladesh. The geographic location of this port creates the opportunity of easy and cost-effective foreign trade to be carried out through this port with all the South Asian countries as well as other Asian countries. Besides, sufficient and low-cost labour is readily available here. For these reasons, Chittagong Port holds much potential as a highly promising regional sea-port .
The recent worldwide wave of private participation in port development and operation has knocked the mindset of the players of port industry of Bangladesh as most cases of world-wide privatization of port operation has succeeded in increasing efficiency of ship operation & cargo handling.
Globalization, deregulation, logistics integration and containerization have forced to reshape the port industry throughout the world which leads to redefine its functional role in the supply chain for the sake of creating customer value and ensuring the survival & growth. This wave of change has also impacted all sectors of Bangladesh in general & maritime sector in particular. Adoption of deregulation policy in 80’s and open market economic policy in 90’s has accelerated trade growth of the country. Consequently, cargo handling through Chittagong Port has not only rapidly increased but cargo type has also diversified. The foreign trade accounts for approximately 38% of GDP. The average maritime dependency factor of the country is about 33% (last five years).
The private sector is playing an increasingly active role in the economic life of the country, while the public sector concentrates more on the physical and social infrastructure. 75% of total investment in the national economy is coming from the private sector. To encourage private sector and create private investment friendly environment Govt. has formulated Bangladesh Private Sector Infrastructure Guidelines (BPSIG) to foster private sector participation for the development of infrastructure of the country.

Port Performance

Chittagong Port Operation is associated with multi dimensional service provider and involves many port users and stakeholders. Port users are Ship Owners and Shipping Agents, Stevedoring Agents (Berth Operator), Handling & Lighting Contractors and Clearing & Forwarding Agents. So Port operation performance depends on many ingredients.

Maximum permissible droughts of vessels range from 8,50 m to 9,20 m. Maximum permissible LOA of a vessel is 188 metres. The tides are important for navigation as they determine the possibility of crossing the shallow area between Kutubdia points and the Karnaphuli entrance and bars within the Port Limit. The tides are semidiurnal with prominent diurnal effect. The approx. tidal range is between 1,5 and 4,8 m. Various services are also included in the Port Operation.

what is total handling capacity by all ports in Bangladesh.
72 million ton cargo was handled during 2016 in Chittagong port according to this OP.This port handle more than 90 percent of cargo. So total handling is around 80 million ton.Capacity is likely somewhat larger than this.
Existing capacity of the Port is nearly 2.5 million TEU containers annually, the sources said adding that the CPA handled more than 2.3 million TEU containers and 72 million tonnes of cargo during 2016.

Mongla port was set up primarily for bulk cargo (there are quite a few cement plants in Mongla as well as an LPG terminal) - but there is also limited capacity for handling containers.

Mongla at its peak handled 44,000 TEU's of container traffic and 365,000 Metric tons of cargo annually (the amount varies every year), so amount is lot less than Chittagong which has multiple ports, docks and jetties of various types. The figures are official figures from Mongla Port Authority.

Capacity is way more at Mongla of course and utilization is low (I'd venture an educated guess of about 10% from what I've heard). Utilization is restricted by the fact that EPZ's (SEZ's) around the port are recently established and that Bhutan and Nepal have not yet received transit through India to Bangladesh. These two land-locked countries could use our ports to export/import many more items, at present for Nepal it's only a few vehicles....

They will be adding container handling cranes shortly, as there are many EPZ's (SEZ's) set up around Mongla for export now. As draft is low near Mongla port (due to withdrawal of water to keep Kolkata port alive), they may be using inland container transshipment method with smaller lower draft vessels instead of 20,000+ DWT container ships.

Together with Payra in the future, Mongla and Chittagong will be the primary export conduits for Bangladesh.

Patenga container terminal at to be ready by 2019.

The Patenga container terminal, — a 600 meter long berthing jetty and planned to
reduce pressure on Chittagong port is expected to be completed by the end of 2019, media report said quoting the chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority last week.
Expansion of the port has become urgent to handle the steady growth of cargo— exports and imports — at a time when the port is becoming the regional shipping hub with presence of India goods for transit.
CPA Chairman M Khaled Iqbal said a new jetty is a must to cope with the ever increasing growth in cargo handling and container vessel traffic. HE was speaking at a meeting with journalists on the eve of 130th Chittagong Port Day.
The Chittagong port has been experiencing 16 to 17 percent growth in cargo and container traffic in the last few years. “If the new jetty is not ready by 2019, this growth rate would come down and that would have the ultimate cascading effect on overall external trade and the economy as a whole.
So a number of projects have been undertaken in the last one year to enhance the capacity and efficiency of the port, he said adding emphasis is being given on the Patenga terminal, which would have three jetties, yards and rail link, as the other three big projects — Karnaphuli container terminal, Laldia multipurpose terminal and Bay terminal – will have and can be partially completed before 2021.
The CPA has requested the government to construct the terminal through the direct procurement method for timely completion. The existing 13 jetties of general cargo berth area would be reconstructed as the Karnaphuli container terminal. The contracts for the Tk 2 billion-project are likely to be awarded by 2018.
