Shutdown in Kupwara to remember victims of massacre
Srinagar, January 27 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, three civilians were killed and several others injured after Indian troops opened fire on peaceful protesters in Ganowpora area of Shopian district, today.
The troops resorted to indiscriminate firing on the demonstrators, who were protesting against the recent killing of three youth by the troops, injuring several of them. Three of the critically injured including Javaid Ahmed Butt and Suhail Ahmed Khan were shifted to hospitals where they were declared as brought dead. The Shopian district was already shut on the fourth consecutive day, today, to mourn the killing of the three youth. The Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik, has called for complete shutdown, tomorrow, against the killing spree by the troops in the occupied territory.
Meanwhile, complete shutdown was observed in Kupwara town, today, to remember the victims of a deadly massacre carried out by the Indian troops in 1994. Indian troops had mercilessly killed twenty-seven innocent Kashmiris on this day in 1994 to punish the people for observing shutdown on Indian Republic Day, the 26th January, in the town. A large number of people during a demonstration at Pratap Park in Srinagar, today, demanded justice for the victims of Kupwara carnage. The protest was organized by human rights activist, Muhammad Ahsan Untoo, and attended among others by Hurriyat leaders, Shabbir Ahmed Dar, Muhammad Iqbal Mir, Muhammad Sultan Magray and Merajuddin Soleh. Shutdown was also observed in Tral town of Pulwama district to mark the third martyrdom anniversary of a youth, Abid Khan, who was killed by the troops in 2015.
APHC leaders, Mir Shahid Saleem, Yasmeen Raja and Sardar Devinder Singh Behl, at a meeting in Jammu condemned the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Heeranagar area of Kathua district in Jammu region. They said that the police were shielding the culprits. They also expressed concern over the hooliganism let loose by the RSS activists in Jammu region. The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Chief, Muhammad Yasin Malik, and the Chairman of Tehreek-e-Muzahmat, Bilal Siddiqi, soon after their release from illegal detention at Srinagar Central Jail visited Soura Institute of Medical Sciences and inquired about the health of two women who were recently injured due to the use of brute force by Indian troops on protesters in Shopian.
On the other hand, hundreds of Kashmiris, Sikhs and their sympathizers held a demonstration outside the Indian High Commission in London to mark India’s Republic Day as Black Day. The demonstrators led by Lord Nazir Ahmed demanded freedom for Kashmir and Khalistan from India. The situation got tense as groups of Indian people tried to disrupt the demonstration, leading to clashes. The police had to intervene to control the situation. Kashmir Council European Union also held a protest in Brussels against the Indian atrocities in occupied Kashmir and observed Indian Republic Day as Black Day.
The New York-based rights organisation, Human Rights Watch in its annual report of 2017 deplored the grim situation of human rights in occupied Kashmir. The report stated that in May last year, the Indian Army gave a commendation to an officer who used a civilian unlawfully as a human shield during the Indian Parliamentary elections in Budgam district in April. It said that in May 2017, a student was killed during a protest by the paramilitary personnel inside a government school in Islamabad district.
