PESHAWAR: Sources in the Afghan Taliban movement have claimed that Pakistani authorities have arrested senior members of the Taliban Supreme council and known Taliban cleric Mullah Ahmadullah Nanay in Quetta on Tuesday. The sources claimed that Mullah Ahmadullah Nanay was taken in to custody from the seminary of Mullah Abdul Hakim in Satellite Town area of Quetta, the capital city of Balochistan province. However, the news could not be confirmed with the Pakistani authorities.

Mullah Nanay is one of the senior-most members of the 23-member strong Taliban Rahbari Shura. He was also the head of the Dawat-e-Jalb wa Jazb/ Auqaf commission of the Afghan Taliban. The commission is responsible for contacting and luring opponents to join the Taliban cause.

Mullah Nanay was an ex-Taliban governor in Herat and Mazar-e-Sharif and had also served as the Minister for Public Works during the Taliban era between 1996 and 2001. He was also a close aide of the Taliban commander Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund. Mullah Baradar was also arrested by Pakistani agencies in Karachi in 2010. He was later released in 2013.

Mullah Ahmadullah Nanay was also a trusted advisor the late Taliban head and notorious terrorist Mullah Mansour. He belonged to Maiwand district of Kandahar province and had a very large following there.

Good job Pakistan, these maggots if are not planning on making peace should be apprehended by Pakistani forces or thrown out.

I agree he should be handed over to the Afghan government, he has committed crimes against the Afghan people and it is their right to now judge him for all he has done.

Exactly the point, these maggots shouldnt define our future.

Fazlullah days are numbered as well.

Unlike some others, I don't consider the Afghan Taliban "Good" at all. They are as inhumane as any other terrorist. I wish common sense prevails on both sides of the border, although I do say harsh things about Afghanistan, I still will be delighted to see them progress and prosper in peace.

It is the same for Bangladesh, these two countries I have a soft spot for, but I don't mention it these days much because of the prevailing situation. Pakistan should have good relationship with all our neighbours.

You shouldn't be afraid calling spade-a spade, the reality is that you will be doing Pakistan a favor because you are looking at the bigger picture in an objective way.

For instance I dont know what your opinion of Hussain Haqqani but I have read his books and have also seen how defended Pakistan when the OBL episode happened, alas most of the Pakistani consider him bad but I think he is real patriot who is telling the story from another perspective to which I agree.

As soon as some positive steps have been taken on the Afghan side against wanted terrorists in Afghanistan(which pakistan demanded), this news comes. Hope we make good partnership and not let our soil be used against eachother.

ISLAMABAD: Three key members of the Afghan Taliban, including Ahmadullah Muti alias Mullah Nanai who served as intelligence chief under Mullah Akhtar Mansoor have been arrested, two Taliban leaders confirmed to The Express Tribune late Tuesday.

The Taliban leaders said Nanai was picked up three days ago from Balochistan. Suleman Agha, the Taliban governor for Daykund province, and Mullah Sani, also known as Samad Sani, chief of a religious school and a well-known trader, who have links with the Taliban, have also been taken into custody, they added on the condition of anonymity.

Former TTP leader Azam Tariq killed in Afghanistan

There was no official word on the arrests. However, some sources have confided to The Express Tribune that the arrests have been made after the Taliban had ‘refused’ to start peace talks with the government. A Taliban source said at least eight Taliban leaders have been arrested from different parts of Balochistan in recent days.

“Several senior leaders, including Amir Khan Muttaqi, former information minister during the Taliban rule, have gone into hiding,” he said.

Mullah Nanai, some Taliban sources say, was recently appointed as the Taliban Chief Justice by Maulvi Haibatullah. He was one of the few top Taliban leaders who had been involved in wooing dissident Taliban leaders to declare support for Akhtar Mansour.

The arrests have been made at a time when the Taliban have intensified attacks in parts of Afghanistan. A credible source close to the Taliban said the “Pakistani crackdown” is linked to the Taliban’s refusal to come to the negotiating table”.

He said Pakistan had recently “approached” the Taliban and asked them to join the peace process. However, they reiterated their stance to not talk to the government.

@A-Team, @Sher Malang and other Afghan nationals. This isn't the first time we have targeted Afghan Taliban. We also went deep into Waziristan and arrested a commander in 2011. We arrested Ramzi Yousuf and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. I believe the assertion that Pakistan is supporting militants is incorrect.

Both of these individuals were not Afghan Talis. Correction needed.
