BAE's Taranis jet can can avoid radar, doesn't need a pilot and can even perform air-to-air combat.

This is the most advanced plane that Britain has ever made.

BAE’s Taranis stealth jet is an unmanned drone that uses state-of-art technology to fly without being spotted by enemy radar.

The incredible aircraft is named after the Celtic god of thunder, and it's not hard to see why.

It uses a complex and groundbreaking communication system which helps it stay invisible.

In order to achieve this unprecedented level of stealth, BAE changed all antennas on the aircraft and the air data boom on the nose of Taranis was removed.

Following these modifications Taranis used a specially-designed system which allowed the aircraft to generate a full set of flight data to pilots on the ground, without being detected.

Taranis has now finished the second phase in its series of test flights and BAE appear happy with its progress.

Incredibly, this unmanned drone is not only capable of carrying out detailed surveillance but can also engage in full air-to-air and air-to-surface combat.

This makes it a powerful tool to military operations across the globe.

Nigel Whitehead, group managing director of BAE Systems, said: "The first flight of Taranis last year was a significant milestone for UK aviation and this latest development underlines the UK's lead in unmanned air systems.

And Philip Dunne, Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology, added: "The success of these test flights is an important milestone for the Taranis project.

“We are gaining vital insights into the potential of unmanned aircraft and this knowledge will shape future capabilities and help reduce the risks faced by military personnel on the frontline."

"The engineering data gathered from the latest phase of trials will help us develop the stealth technologies on Taranis further.”

But all this modern and exciting technology doesn't come cheap - one of these stealth planes will cost Air Forces £185million.

The news of the second phase of test flights was revealed at the UK's biggest airshow at Farnborough.

At the show BAE also announced a Top Gun style advanced helmet to help fighter pilots during night missions.

The Helmet-Mounted Display (HMD) brings a fully digital solution that provides today's combat pilot with exceptional night vision.

With state-of-the-art target tracking technology integrated within a visor-projector system, pilots get real-time data in front of their eyes..

It also brings breakthrough abilities for night combat.

The helmet includes a digital night vision camera, which give piolts superior vision once the sun has set.

And the next-generation device includes a cutting-edge tracking system that ensures the pilot's exact head position and the aircraft computer system are continuously in sync.

Joseph Senftle, vice president and general manager for communications and controls solutions at BAE Systems said: "As the industry transitions from analogue to digital display solutions, Striker II brings a superior, fully digital capability to multiple platform types.

"Designed to address evolving mission requirements with advanced digital night vision technology, our new HMD was built to be 'future proof' and seamlessly adaptable to technology advancements in the years ahead."
