When country calls for sacrifice, a solider never thinks twice. Indian Army soldier Abdul Hamid stands as an extraordinary example of what we are taking about. On September 1965, Pakistani forces launched a belligerent attack on the Indian forces stationed in the Khem Karan sector. What happened next went down in the history of warfare to probably be never repeated. This is the unfathomable story of Indian Army soldier, Param Veer Chakra Havildar Abdul Hamid.

Company Quartermaster Havildar Abdul Hamid was a soldier in the 4th Battalion, The Grenadiers of the Indian Army. Hamid’s call of duty came on 10th September 1965 during the Indo-Pak war, in the battle of Asal Uttar. At 0800 hours, a battalion of Pakistani Patton tanks attacked the holding area of the 4th Grenadier positions. The Indian soldiers came under intense artillery bombardment but didn’t respond. Within an hour, the Pakistanis had penetrated forward Indian positions. The situation grew grim. In the melee, Hamid spotted 6 Pakistani tanks heading towards his men. He didn’t think twice, hopped on to his jeep which had a gun mounted on it and rushed towards the tanks to flank them.

Hamid had served for 5 years in the anti-tank division and was the best 106mm recoilless rifle shot in the battalion. With his experience and fearless will to save his men, Hamid strategically hid his jeep from the enemy vision. Even amidst heavy firing and intense shelling, Hamid hit bull’s eye with his tank piercing shells and destroyed 2 Patton tanks, while the rest four were abandoned.

The action restarted next morning and Hamid was back on his recoilless gun. Meanwhile, Pakistani Air Force moved in but failed miserably to inflict much damage. He again took down two more tanks the same day! By now Hamid and his team had taken down 4 tanks. A citation was sent the same day, crediting him for his achievement but nobody knew that Hamid would again blow up 3 more tanks the very next day. As the citation was already sent, the last 3 tanks he blew up were not taken into account.

The rumble was still not over. The Pakistani men figured out how Hamid was tricking them and finally surrounded him—Hamid’s jeep was now a trapped target. Hamid ordered his men to jump off the jeep and instead of abandoning the jeep he pointed his gun at the tank that already had Hamid on target. Both of them fired, their shells hit their targets and Hamid made supreme sacrifice for India. That was the 8th tank he took down!

The soldiers sacrifice aside, the level of low quality crap IDRW generates should have them renamed as Indian Defence Rhetoric whiners.
Writing styles aside, jeep mounted 105 mm recoiless rifle has been the unsung hero of Indian Army, be it with abdul Hamid or at Longewala, these little puppies have punched way beyond their weight.

How good a jeep mounted 105 mm recoil less rifle will fare against tanks today. Now both sides have laser guided anti tank missiles. The missiles are getting better. Tanks have reactive armor. Tank are also getting better. Only time will tell but Syrian war has plenty of lessons where US anti tank missiles were used against Russian tanks with mixed results.

That and the Patton's ability to catch fire on even the slightest ding that goes through the armour.
