If the atrocities in Paris weren’t already shocking enough, this shield can give you an idea of how violent and heavily armed the attackers really were.

French journalist William Molinie posted this image shortly after the attacks, showing a bullet-proof police shield riddled with bullets.

Molinie says the shield was used by police who were trying to save hostages in the Bataclan theatre during the horrific incident which saw multiple attacks taking place throughout the city.

The shield, which would have been carried by a BRI – the French hostage rescue team – officer, was struck by at least 17 bullets.

Sadly the terrorists quickly turned their weapons on the innocent concert-goers, killing 89 hostages.

Others managed to escape or were saved by police, after gunfire interrupted the Eagles of Death Metal concert.

I suppose this is made of Carbon composite material with kevlar coating.
The bullet mark damage pattern is a tell tale sign of use of polymeric material.
Great design, would have saved several lives surely.

Truly, they deserve salutations for saving lives and putting their own lives at risks while performing their duty bravely.
Can you,by looking at these pattern and size of holes could determine and give me an idea that possibly what kind of gun was used?

regards

The weapons that the terrorists used during the attacks this november (As in January) were Kalachnikovs, most probably bought on the black market.
-
Weapons that in front of,our police officers have no chance at all. (Only the soldiers and the special units could handle such threats.)
-
If you want to know, the first police officers that entered in the Bataclan (way before the BRI) were members of the BAC (Brigade anti-criminalité),their intervention permitted to neutralize a terrorist, but had to retreat as they were targeted by the other terrorists and because they didn't have any protection, and most probably had no chance against guys armed with assault rifles.

They fought bravely, and this must be given appreciation.:)

where angels fear to tread....

hats off to these Policemen!!!
It must have been a heart wrenching site for those who entered the theatre. I read an account of a police officer who said that he thought he had stepped in water when he entered the Bataclan but it was blood. RIP innocent souls!

Kalashnikov!

Yeah that's what I read.

@Vauban With your permission..

When a handgun bullet strikes body armor, it is caught in a “web” of very strong fibers. These fibers absorb and disperse the impact energy that is transmitted to the bullet proof vest from the bullet, causing the bullet to deform or “mushroom.” Additional energy is absorbed by each successive layer of material in bullet proof vests, until such time as the bullet has been stopped.
how_does_body_armor_work.jpg

Because the fibers work together both in the individual layer and with other layers of material in the vest, a large area of the bullet proof vest becomes involved in preventing the bullet from penetrating. This also helps in dissipating the forces which can cause nonpenetrating injuries (what is commonly referred to as “blunt trauma”) to internal organs. Unfortunately, at this time no material exists that would allow body armor to be constructed from a single ply of material.

Currently, today’s modern generation of concealable bullet proof vests can provide protection in a variety of levels designed to defeat most common low- and medium-energy handgun rounds. Bullet proof vests designed to defeat rifle fire is of either semirigid or rigid construction, typically incorporating hard materials such as ceramics and metals. Because of its weight and bulkiness, it is impractical for routine use by uniformed patrol officers and is reserved for use in tactical situations where it is worn externally for short periods of time when confronted with higher level threats.

Below you can find a small movie which shows the impact of a bullet. This show has been broadcasted by Discovery Channel Europe.

Materials Used
Several manufacturers have been involved in developing and refining materials used in a bullet proof vest.

Kevlar®
Kevlar DuPont’s been protecting law enforcement with their products for over 25 years, using its Kevlar brand fiber – initially created in 1965. It was the first material of its kind to be used in today’s generation of concealable bulletproof vests.

What Is Kevlar?
It’s an artificial organic fiber with various properties that allow for high strength in low weight, high cut resistance and high chemical resistance. It’s flame resistant, won’t liquefy or soften and it’s not affected when water-logged.

Kevlar’s Past
Kevlar’s existence in the market is the brainwork of Stephanie Kwolek. After the initial creation, and in 1971, it was brought onto the market. DuPont developed Kevlar 29 during the early 1970s, and it was regarded as being the first generation of bullet-resistant fibers. This fiber helped with the creation of bendable, concealable bulletproof vests.

Kevlar 129 is the second generation, brought onto the market in 1988 and offered even higher ballistic protection against things like 9mm FMJ. Kevlar Correctional, in 1995, provided correctional officers and law enforcement protection with its puncture resistant technology.

Kevlar XP is a new development that gives a nearly 15% decrease in back face deformation. The Soft Body Armor technology allows producers to create more comfortable vest designs with a 10% decrease in weight.

How does armor work?

that thing did a good job. also the police. he must had balls of steel looking through the field of view to watch out of the terrorists while bullets impacting right infront of them, hearing the sound of impact and the vibration caused by AK47 shot bullets.

I tell you what would have been a neat trick. To have firing ports built into the shield, so the terrorists would get hit and they couldn't hit the brave police commandos.

The modern day scutum.Riot police even use the testudo formation when under projectile attack by mob.
Great job by saving the lives of civilians.
But seeing the equipment and physical fitness of the european police and comparing them to our joke police with wooden stick Laathis,.303 rifles and potbelly men makes me sad.:(
