Reminds me of something...
Tu ki jaane yaar ameera
Ay roti banda kha jandi aey
(You don't know, o my rich friend,
This bread, it can eat a person)

The affects of prolonged poverty are difficult to imagine.
The knowledge, patience, self control in financial matters and other habits that lead a person to make smarter choice are aquired and not innate. Those amongst us who have had the fortune of born in homes where they received reasonable upbringing that allow us to avoid toxic behaviours oftentimes start to think that thinking the way we do comes naturally to us.
The cycle of poverty is hard to break. Just as wealth begets more wealth, poverty begets more poverty.
Add to all these the reality of today: the ability to see how poor you are compared to others. These days you can see how the rich live. There are constant reminders of what they have and what you don't.
Can we imagine the affects of knowing not only are you dirt poor but your children too will likely remain so? The damaging affects of the uncertainty of knowing one medical emergency and you have to choose between getting your loved ones medicine or a roof?
The state of mind that comes with wealth and its ability to shield you from some harsh realities versus the one that comes with poverty and its ability to make to face those harsh realities is not easy to imagine for most.
Point is, its easier to see the destructive behaviors of some of the poor, to see their lack of desire to pay taxes and desire to freeload. And wasting money on cigarettes and cable when they could save to better their lives like smart people, but it's much harder to see the socio-economic realities that shaped all those.
It is important to understand that just we are a product of our environment, the poor are also a product of theirs. They are not poor due to laziness, likely demotivated due to poverty.
Once you see the poor as humans and poverty as more than simply lack of financial resources, you can better formulate ways to eradicate it from your society.
