Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy on Monday criticised Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh for proposing that Rahul Gandhi take over as Prime Minister and said that legally Mr. Gandhi and his sister were barred from the post.

In a statement, Dr. Swamy dubbed Mr. Singh as the “mouthpiece of the Janpath coterie” and said the coterie had “lost all hope on Manmohan Singh performing in the coming months as the 2G spectrum scam unravels and the list of accused lengthens with additions from the Congress.”

He accused Mr. Digvijay Singh of treating the Prime Minister as “some kind of regent in the Maino dynasty, waiting for Rahul to grow up.”

Dr. Swamy, however, argued that there was a legal bar on Mr. Gandhi becoming the Prime Minister “arising from Italian law which made him a citizen upon birth. He has never renounced this inherited citizenship and that he has travelled on Italian passport all over Europe on an alias.”

Dr. Swamy said Mr. Gandhi should “learn from the experience of his mother whose attempt to become the Prime Minister in 2004 was aborted when the then President of India Abdul Kalam wrote a letter (which is still to be published) which was read by two witnesses present when Ms. Sonia Gandhi received that letter, namely Natwar Singh and Manmohan Singh. It should now be perfectly clear to Ms. Sonia Gandhi as well as her two children that there is no legal way by which any of them can ever become the Prime Minister of India.”

Thank you big time SS

If they don't get to be PM then you'll get what has happened now wherin you have a PM that is answerable to a party president. This is undermining and flawed. You need a PM wih ultimate authority not one with their hands tied by the party president. If the Gandhis are barred from being PM then they should be barred from being in politics altogether.

If Modi does win then I hope the Gandhis get the message and quit Indian politics and golive their lives.

Man I don't know if Rahul is going to be a good PM or a idiot one. All I want is to have a party will total majority so they can go ahead with strong decision making. Nation needs a strong economy can any party bring it??

Is Dr. Swamy an agent of Intelligence Bureau or he is running political intelligence group of his own?? If not how he has all this information about Rahul's American and european trips and and the letter that Kalam wrote to Sonia gandhi???

Modi can bring in development for sure. No argument on that. But Hitler also brought in big development in Germany and all Germans loved him. Is development all we want. Im not a congress supporter but Im not a Modi supporter as well. Modi calls for equality and Congress gives additional support and favors reservations to minorities. Additional support to minorities is mentioned in constitution to keep them safe and make them feel safe. If no reservations are there for minority, there wont be level playing field for them at all. We will become like our neighboring country, killing different religions first then minority castes and so on.

Actually I agree...PM or no PM, the real power center of this country is at 10 Janpath and not 7 RCR during Congress/UPA regimes. So instead of giving them power without accountability, let them be PM itself and have the accountability as well.

In hindsight if Sonia had become the PM in 2004, I bet my *** UPA would have been defeated in 2009. The opposition to Sonia becoming PM actually became quite handy for the Congress dynasty.

I sadly believe era of total mandate has gone and we are living in an era of fractured mandates and 'coalition dharmas'.

Very wrong and flawed reasoning.

Realistically every individual irrespective of his/her faith is a minority. I'm a Hindu from South..but how does another guy in Uttarkhand being a Hindu positively affect my chances in education or jobs ? Or in case me being a Muslim how does the same guy negatively affect mine ?

Its all in the mind. And the true minorities in this land are the Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists & Parsis each with less than 2% of the population and in case of Jains/Parsis less than 1%. Do you see them going around asking for reservation or claiming they are being discriminated ? What I mean to say is, if you perform as an individual you will shine..else you wont. Calling religion as a factor in your failure is just seeking an excuse and nothing else.

Congress knows this mentality perfectly and play on it time to time seeking to remind the 'minorities' (Muslims & Christians) that they are somehow discriminated against, that they would be persecuted if not for Congress, that they are under a siege and must vote for Congress to come to their rescue.

As for comparison of Modi to Hitler...BS. Hitler did not rule by participating in democratic elections and winning every five years. Modi does that. What you see in Gujarat is an inclusive development that even Muslims are voting for him. Anyone comparing Modi to Hitler is only talking through his rear.

AND FYI can you tell me where in the constitution 'additional support' for minorities are mentioned and what exactly are those 'additional support' ?

Sorry to inform everybody, but this is total bull.

Anybody born on Indian soil before 1 July 1987 is a citizen of India by birth. Rahul Gandhi falls into this category. Anybody born on Indian soil between 1987 and 2004 is a citizen of India if at least one parent is an Indian citizen.

It is ludicrous to suggest (without evidence, as Swamy always does) that Rahul Gandhi has an Italian passport or that he travelled across Europe on the same. When his Indian passport carries the name of India's most powerful family, why would he need to use any other passport?

Mr Swamy should show what evidence he has for this new concoction. It should be a piece of cake to prove that somebody travelled across Europe on an Italian passport.

People abandon all their critical thinking skills when the conclusion supports their own political/religious/whatever view. If this accusation was directed against a member of the party they support, I have no doubt that most people would laugh it off. When accusations are made against somebody they dislike, then all reasoning go for a hike.

Then you should check out some of the other things Mr Swamy has said. He has been a serial conspiracy monger for decades now, and personal attacks have been his forte.

Anyway, this particular allegation (like all of his allegations) is BS, and that is patently obvious. Neither Italy nor India allows dual citizenship, and holding both countries' passports together is a punishable offence under both countrys' laws. Anybody who aquires an Italian passport automatically loses Indian citizenship, and vice versa. He would not be eligible to be an MP either, if he is an Italian citizen, so Mr Swamy should go to court and have Rahul removed from parliament, if his allegations are true.

we'll see, if his word has any weight, courts will decide... we can just wait.

He won't take this to court, because he knows it won't hold water there. He has not taken any of his previous allegations to court either. If he had even a shred of evidence for this, he would have taken it to court, instead of to the media. The courts can't decide on something that don't come to them. So his supporters will all wait for it to happen, until he comes up with a new conspiracy theory. This has been his modus operandi for decades. In the 80s, he used to accuse Sonia Gandhi of being a KGB agent. In the 90s, he used to accuse her of being a CIA agent. In the 80s, he has accused her of conspiring to kill Indira Gandhi by deliberately delaying medical attention. In the 90s, he accused her of conspiring with the LTTE to murder her husband. And these are just some of his saner accusations.

You can wait all you want, but I assure you, he won't take this issue to court either. In a few months, he will come up with a new conspiracy theory, and then that will be the talk of the town.
