There is no commitment on the release of 5,000 Taliban prisoners – Afghan president after US deal

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said that releasing up to 5,000 Taliban prisoners cannot be considered a pre-condition of peace talks. His statement comes a day after the Taliban signed a peace deal with the US.
Ghani made his comments at a press conference on Sunday.

There is no commitment to releasing 5,000 prisoners. This is the right and the self-will of the people of Afghanistan. It could be included in the agenda of the intra-Afghan talks, but cannot be a prerequisite for talks.

The Afghan leader confirmed that the US is facilitating the prisoners’ release but it is ultimately up to Kabul to “decide on it.”

The US-Taliban deal says that Washington will work with all sides on a prisoner swap as a confidence-building step. According to the plan, the US with the Afghan government and the Taliban would free up to 5,000 and 1,000 people respectively by March 10, which is set as the first day of peace talks between the Taliban and Kabul.

اسلام آباد افغان طالبان کے ترجمان ذبیح اللہ مجاہد نے افغان صدر اشرف غنی کے بیان پر رد عمل دیتے ہوئے واضح اعلان کیا ہے کہ طالبان قیدیوں کی رہائی تک انٹر افغان مذاکرات میں شرکت نہیں کریں گے ۔


تفصیلات کے مطابق دو روز قبل امریکہ اور طالبان کے درمیان امن معاہدہ دوحہ میں ہوا جس کے بعد افغان صدرا شرف غنی پریس کانفرنس سے خطاب کرتے ہوئے امن معاہدے کی اہم شرط سے پیچھے ہٹ گئے اور کہا کہ طالبان کے پانچ ہزار قیدیوں کی رہائی کا کوئی وعدہ نہیں کیا ، طالبان قیدیوں کی رہائی کا معاملہ انٹر افغان مذاکرات کے ایجنڈے میں شامل کیا جاسکتا ہے۔

افغان صدر کے بیان پر اب طالبان کی جانب سے بھی اہم ترین بیان جاری کر دیا گیاہے جس میں کہا گیاہے کہ قیدیوں کی رہائی تک انٹرا افغان مذاکرات نہیں ہوں گے ۔ غیر ملکی خبر رساں ایجنسی کے مطابق امریکہ طالبان معاہدے کے مطابق طالبان کے 5 ہزار قیدی 10 مارچ تک رہا ہونے ہیں لیکن افغان صدر نے طالبان قیدیوں کی رہائی کی شرط تسلیم کرنے سے انکار کر دیا تھا ۔


یاد رہے کہ گزشتہ روز افغان صدر اشرف غنی نے پریس کانفرنس سے خطاب کرتے ہوئے کہا تھاکہ طالبان کے قیدیوں کا معاملہ افغانستان کے عوام کا حق اور خود ارادیت ہے، جزوی جنگ بندی مکمل جنگ بندی کے مقصد کے حصول تک جاری رہے گی۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ افغانستان میں7روزکی جزوی جنگ بندی جاری رہے گی،قیدیوں کی رہائی پر فیصلے کا اختیار افغان حکومت کا ہے،امریکا قیدیوں کی رہائی میں مدد فراہم کررہا ہے،طالبان قیدیوں کی رہائی کا معاملہ مذاکرات کی پیشگی شرط نہیں بن سکتا۔ان کا کہناتھا کہ انٹر اافغان مذاکرات کیلئے اگلے 9 دن میں مذاکراتی ٹیم تشکیل دی جائیگی۔
