What's new

The word Afghanistan existed before the reign of Ahmad Shah Abdali

.
May be, may be not but probably not, and also not interested. Crossed Hindu Khush centuries ago and now no link with back there, period

.
And Indus empire/civilization existed before Babylon and Egypt, long before the Afghans as a race came into being. your point is?

. .
And the name Khorasan existed before Afghanistan.

So, Khorasan wins.

Now change the name back to Khorasan which is what minorities in Afghanistan, such as Tajiks, Hazaras, Uzbeks, Aimaqs, Turkmen, Baluchis, Qizilbash, etc. are calling for.

The purpose of posting this article was to dismiss the notion prevalent among Pakistanis that word Afghanistan did not exist before 18th century, or that it was a term coined by British. A misinformation is spread by Pakistanis on social media that Afghanistan word was coined by British. I was surprised to see learned man like Rtd-Brigidar Asad Munir claiming that the term Afghanistan was coined by Elphinstone. I messaged him on twitter and shared this article of mine with him.

Hodge-podge history with no clear etymology. Here's the actual etymology:

--

The earliest mention of the name Afġān (Abgân) is by Shapur I of the Sassanid Empire during the 3rd century CE. From a more limited, ethnological point of view, “Afḡān” is the term by which the Persian-speakers of Afghanistan (and the non-Paṧtō-speaking ethnic groups generally) designate the Paṧtūn

In short, the word is Persian in origin and its how Persian-speakers referred to the other major ethnic group in the region namely Pashtuns. The word isn't coined by British, it is still Persian in origin.
