The purpose of posting this article was to dismiss the notion prevalent among Pakistanis that word Afghanistan did not exist before 18th century, or that it was a term coined by British. A misinformation is spread by Pakistanis on social media that Afghanistan word was coined by British. I was surprised to see learned man like Rtd-Brigidar Asad Munir claiming that the term Afghanistan was coined by Elphinstone. I messaged him on twitter and shared this article of mine with him.

In short, the word is Persian in origin and its how Persian-speakers referred to the other major ethnic group in the region namely Pashtuns. The word isn't coined by British, it is still Persian in origin.
