Indeed. The government is Sunni dominated (except the direct Assad family and entourage). It's really simple, there is a rule of thumb for 'civil wars' and especially foreign funded/armed proxy wars: at the very least a bare majority of the population need to support the government. Out of 23 million people, only about 3 million are Alawites. That doesn't get you a majority. Syria has been a secular state since its founding. People really think that a large part of the Syrian Sunni population isn't very secular and HATES the sharia? Yes Saudi idiots, think on that.

The Syrian government controls most of the population, and almost all major cities. You can sit in your tea house with your jihadi friends looking at maps with the colors green and red and say hey: green looks like it's spreading, but they're really taking small villages full of sharia-fans (village people). And talking about Shia militias, yes, the only Sunnis who do any fighting are die hard jihadists. So I'd rather have Shia fighters as well. Don't forget, at least half of the Syrian army is Sunni too. See it as the CHP of Syria, against the brain dead Syrian zombie religious hordes (akpiss).
