Absolutely correct. There is a process for changing the law and it is being followed. Please read up up the hearings being held in Congress by Ocasio-Cortez.

Children whose parents are in jail are put in the care of their relatives or social services. All children are subject to the same law.

USA has a due process for immigration for those fleeing persecution that is legal, but these people chose not to follow it by their decisions. They are being punished only because the choice they made to break US law.
