The US Needs to Build More Subways

That's the pretense, the real reason is Americans all have this inane notion that they will all be billionaires or at the very least multi-millionaire and when that happens they won't have any need for subways.

The rich are the demigods that the American masses worship and want to join their club one day, until that time they need to put in their due, i.e. suffer while grinding out 3 jobs without any support from the gov't and paying exorbitant tax relative to their income so that the rich can trickle down manna on them.
People don't like to be told the truth.

The truth is that if you are both not rich and living in a city, you are highly unlikely to generate the wealth that you need to sustain said city.

This is totally unsustainable, and therefore eventually is not sustained.

This is the real reason why most Americans do not live in cities.

yet Hyperloop was seen as an amazing idea even though it needs the same eminent domain. and how come no other developed country has the same land acquisition problems?
Billionaire worship, Americans believe they will be one as well someday...

So many fantasies people have about the United States in this thread on display.

It's fascinating that people still believe them.

I don't see many people jumping up and down saying they want to spend $1Trillion on a hyperloop line.

how come no other developed country has the same land acquisition problems?

HSR is not some gift from heaven either
From a financial standpoint, only two HSR lines in the world are profitable: Paris-Lyon in France and Tokyo-Osaka in Japan. A third line, Hakata-Osaka in Japan, breaks even. The majority of high-speed rail lines require large government subsidies from both general taxpayers and drivers. Even with generous subsidies, traveling by high-speed rail is still more expensive than flying for 12 of the 23 most popular high-speed rail routes in the world—regardless of whether the traveler purchases a ticket in advance or only a week before travel. Flying would be cheaper on some other routes if they were served by discount airlines. For routes that are less than 150 miles, intercity coach buses are much cheaper and take only slightly longer than high-speed trains. The evidence suggests that HSR can only be competitive on routes that are between 200 and 500 miles in length.

Check out this German's opinion of HSR vs driving/flying/buses in the US.
Everybody who thinks HSR is going to be some miracle should closely listen to what she is saying. It is the reality of HSR...and it isn't something great that is empowering the masses.

Or you make driving prohibitively expensive and inconvenient,

Aren't you now encouraging people to move away by putting up these roadblocks? If people have options on where they can live what is stopping them from deciding to leave? It can be claimed US suburbanization was caused by the dissatisfactions people saw in city living.

Also (at least in the Northeast) with the advent of iced-cooled railroad cars in the early 1900's the need to have extensive farmland near cities to feed the population became less crucial. When powered refrigerated cars took off in the early 1950s agriculture almost completely shifted to middle America and all this open land that was once farms became the basis for suburbia. Now instead of spending money to buy a 100 year old row house in a city you could get a plot of land that was once part of a farm for almost nothing and build a new modern house with the latest amenities like a garage, a yard in the back with swingset for the kids, a pool, a deck, a big green lawn, etc.

In 19505a tiny 1200sq ft cape was considered a luxury compared to a cramped city apartment. Now it's 2500+.

ah yes, suburbia, well known for being... low cost?

Not us, no. But if you guys would stop bullying smaller Nations around you we would not need to have a large military to support them. This nonsense of " All of South China Sea is belong to us" has got to stop. How many enemies do you want to make? How many friends does China have? This Xi fella and CCP is going to put your Nation in a bad spot if you guys don't wake up... btw, if we want more subways, we will build them. Right now it's not a huge issue for us
Who is bullying who when US soldiers still station in Iraq when their PM asked US soldiers to leave but refuse?
Who is the one invading syria? Who is the one after drone mistaken civilian as terrorist and killed them but none of US personnel are charged for killing afghan? And we got a hyprocrite talking about bully small nation?

How many civilian killed by Chinese military for past 20 years? 0. How many civilian killed by US for past 20 years? 999999999...
Don't worry when I asked the Chinese members here what great invention has China brought to the world to use in the last 100 years all they could think of was the e-cigarette.

Even wars have brought things like microwave ovens, computers, jet engines, etc.

For your info, Chinese invented unmanned autonomous passenger flying vehicle.

exactly. its funny because none of them actually are moving towards becoming billionaires in a sustainable and reproducible way, they're just trying to bet on meme stocks so they can get rich without effort instead of using time proven methods.
The further away you live from a city, the lower cost that land becomes.

It's very simple.

ah yes by your logic real estate costs in the Bronx should be higher than in Nassau County.

Hey if you want low cost there are plenty of vacant homes in the inner city you can buy for almost nothing. Too bad the Liberal governments don't tear them down and put up new ones to combat the homeless.

These must be bots.

Almost everything turns into New York and California with them......

True, I'll give you some credit for inventing it.
Let's see if it is actually a practical invention and not end up like the elevated bus.

The problem is they think the vast majority of American live in big cities.

otherwise their inefficiency only drags themselves down.

You can jam the entire population of China into one big cubed building and call that far more efficient than China's current strategy. However maybe the population isn't going to like it (unless they are the mindless Borg)

Efficiency has to be weighed with what the population is going to accept.
