The US Has Already Lost The Afghanistan War

WASHINGTON: US wars launched since the attacks of September 11, 2001 have left 225,000 dead and cost up to $4.4 trillion, according to a new study by university researchers.

The study published by Brown University this week focused on the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and counter-terrorism campaigns in Pakistan and Yemen, which came in the wake of the 9/11 attacks on the United States.

The authors argued that governments almost always go to war underestimating the potential duration and costs of a conflict while overestimating "the political objectives that can be accomplished by the use of brute force."

The study said "an extremely conservative estimate" of the casualty toll was about 225,000 people killed and 365,000 wounded in the wars so far.

The number of soldiers killed comes to 31,741, including about 6,000 Americans, 1,200 allied troops, 9,900 Iraqis, 8,800 Afghans, 3,500 Pakistanis as well as 2,300 US private security contractors, it said.

The civilian toll was much higher, with an estimated 172,000 dead, including about 125,000 Iraqis, 35,000 Pakistanis and 12,000 Afghans, it said.

The study acknowledged that estimating the number of dead was difficult, particularly the toll for insurgents, putting the number at between 20,000 to 51,000 insurgents killed.

The report found that 168 reporters and 266 humanitarian workers were among the dead since the United States launched its "war on terror" after 9/11.
The wars also have triggered a massive flow of refugees and displaced persons, with more than 7.8 million displaced, mostly in Iraq and Afghanistan, it said.

The study estimated the financial cost of the wars at a minimum of $3.7 trillion and up to $4.4 trillion, which represents about a quarter of the country's current debt.

The researchers arrived at a much larger figure than the Pentagon's previous estimates, as they included spending by the Department of Homeland Security to counter terrorist threats, government projections for spending on wounded veterans through 2051 and war-related funds from the State Department and the US Agency for International Development.

The US government has previously cited the price tag for the wars at about one trillion dollars.

"Our estimate is larger because we include more than the direct Pentagon appropriation for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the larger global war on terror," said the study.

"Wars always cost more than what the Pentagon spends for the duration of the combat operation."

It is more than 300,000 people dead worldwide and more than 5 trillions, which is not shown. If US troops secretly hidding in Afghanistan, it will increase debt to 21 trillion next five years according to the report. Debt means their deep sins and guilty in which American avoid discussing this.

If the US does not leave Bagram and Kandahar, the war will not be over. Just calling it an end to the war without actually ending it won't work.

Absolutely the US 'lost' in Afghanistan. We went in, overthrew a government, occupied the country, then installed a new government. But we 'lost'. Did not know that Baghdad Bob is consulting for youse guys.

Yes. A new government Karzai who cannot go outside his home in the fear of being blown up!

I'm amazed at how deluded Americans are in this forum.

The thing is if you leave today, tomorrow your American installed government would be overthrown and the people you overthrew would be back in power, in 6 years (given thats the timeframe it took them the last time) they will conduct another big act of terrorism, and the cycle would repeat.

Very early on you guys figured out it would be a game of hearts and minds, but decided not to pursue that since blowing things up was a lot more easier. Your guys in charge were more about selling their bombs and guns and contracted personnel to the US military forces, there was a lot more money in war and you conducted war for the sake of conducting war, not for any political objectives.

Certainly the people who were in charge of this did not lose. Your country did, Afghanistan lost, Taliban lost, Pakistan lost, but the actual war makers did not lose. They would gladly do this in another 6 years or sooner.

OK, lets take from another angle,
What has USA/NATO accomplished in Afghanistan?
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

What was the War in Afghanistan all about?
OBL is claimed to be dead.
Why is NATO still in Afghanistan?

Ummm... Kabul is like a city-state. Anything outside of Kabul is a war zone.
Didn't anyone know that?

Even Kabul is seeing attacks now. The whole afghanistan is soon to be turned into a big battle ground.

This image shows the no. of attacks on NATO and ANA troops in Afghanistan. Prepared by a national NGO of Afghanistan. Notice the trend.

On average, daily, 30 attacks are taking place on their troops and they still believe in their covered-up casualty figures of 1600! lol @ the dreamland some Americans are living in.

According to the may 2010 pentagon report, Talibans have "tangible presence" in 80% of Afghanistan, up from 72% in 2009.

NATO and ISAF terrorists are definitely doing a good PR job in covering up their casualties and losses, not taking into account ground realities. News blackouts are frequently ordered foreign journalists pressurized to not release full details. When talibans invite foreign journalists to come and inspect the ground realities for themselves, no wonder no foreign journalist posses the balls to.

Hopefully this war leads US breaking up into 20 pieces. Most likely it will. I say by 2020.

What?

if you think that USA will be destroyed by 2020 then kindly tell us, what would happen to a country like Pakistan by that time?

May be you think that Pakistan would be a superpower by 2020!! Right? Right?

No need to get emotional, this is what happens in war. Are you just born or what?

If you want to blame someone for all these emotional scenes then you should blame Taliban who started all this by doing 9/11. And if you're gonna say that 9/11 was not done by Taliban then don't bother to reply.

wake up and smell the coffee mate - it was Al-Qaeda who did 911.....which land are you living in....lala land.

Thanks so much for confirming. Everyone knows who did 9/11, that was just a typo which you could have ignored. Anyways, I made a mistake and I accept it.

But I'm happy that you don't believe in conspiracy theories like others.

America can start a fight but never finish it. The war is lost from the very beginning when no economic benefit could be reap from it, instead Afghanistan has become a blackhole and the American military have become a blackhole to the taxpayers, having military basses fighting insurgency trying to control oil routes in the middle east, basses in europe and asia and all over the world, kinda meaningless in the end, with a military spread so thin, and the failure to invade and occupy a country like their testbed in Iraq/Afghanistan, American military like their NASA space program will become a blackhole making very little profit but dumping lots and lots of taxpayers money, soon we will see social programs and everything else neglected, American way of life will never be the same as before again.

One of our pieces will be Canada. And then we will clean house and hang traitors.

Yeah, I live terrible. Can't wait for my visa to move to a paradise like Pakistan or Maylasia!
