define: mad desperation? What is Chinese total space budget? Resource spend on the program compare to that .... say education, health care, the summer game, etc. the money spend on the recent earthquake.

China is still a poor and developing country; there is nothing wrong to move forward towards Western advancement. i totaly, agree with your idea of ( Asian's ways with absorption ) but only of asian values & asian culture goodies, well west , had givin heypocracy, selfishness, lootings of asian wealth, asian goods on the name of trade, also asia was being intruded again & again, for the number of crazy reasons.
Eruope and US , were living on thier dream lives,on asian's hunger, thier poverty, and thier shattered dreams. its going on for decads, what i see, is the unholy , unhumman , selfish control of asian resourses by the westrn nations.
by the way, ( imprealistic - democracy) never been, a good system to be implemented in asia, i guss (socialism - bassed democracy) is the future of ASIA. chinese space adventure is a reminder, of asian progress and a great challenge for the imprealistic powers across the universe.

Why should India race to catch China?

India is already one step ahead of China according to India's space research chief G Madhavan Nair.

India is "a step ahead" of China in satellite technology and can surpass Beijing in space research by tapping the talent of its huge pool of young scientists, India's space research chief said Monday.

G Madhavan Nair said India and China were "on par (with each other) as far as rocket technology is concerned," the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

Though China was ahead in planning a manned mission to the moon, "We are a step ahead of China in satellite technology," Nair, chief of the Indian Space Research Organisation, told a gathering in the southern city of Coimbatore.
