Harris Corporation Announces Plans for New Radio Manufacturing Facility for its RF Communications Business

Company Creating World-Class Factory for Assured Communications Products

ROCHESTER, NY, March 15, 2010 — Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, plans to develop a new state-of-the-art manufacturing and logistics facility for the production of tactical and public safety radio systems by its RF Communications business.

The plans call for the purchase of a 573,000-square-foot building in Henrietta, N.Y., from Xerox Corporation. A subsequent, total renovation will allow Harris to consolidate its manufacturing operations into a single site, improving efficiency.

"We are making a significant long-term investment in our radio business to better serve the important work of both our U.S. Department of Defense and international military customers, as well as state, federal and local public safety agencies," said Dana Mehnert, group president, Harris RF Communications. "Today, our manufacturing operations are housed in four separate locations. In purchasing this building, along with the help of New York State and Monroe County, we will be streamlining our production, allowing us to bring new products to market more quickly and at a lower cost."

Harris will be purchasing an existing building at 1350 Jefferson Road in Henrietta to house manufacturing, supply chain, product service, logistics and engineering operations. Approximately half of Harris RF Communications' local workforce of 2,300 will relocate to the new facility with the balance remaining in the city of Rochester. The move is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2011 after renovations are complete.

Xerox plans to vacate the building by September 30 and relocate its 1,140 employees to its Webster campus and downtown location.

"Harris RF Communications was founded in this community 50 years ago," Mehnert said. "Our success is directly related to generations of talented and committed workers from this region. We're pleased to reaffirm our commitment to both the City of Rochester and Monroe County."

"In today's global economy, companies have the choice of doing business anywhere in the world, and Harris Corporation's decision to remain in Monroe County speaks volumes about our community's significant assets," said Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks. "This project is also critical to the strength and vitality of our local economy because of the highly skilled jobs retained and Harris' significant investment in their new Henrietta facility. We are proud to partner with Harris Corporation in this effort and I'd like to thank them for their continued commitment to Monroe County."

"I am extremely pleased that ESD was able to assist Harris RF Communications retain 2,300 jobs for the greater Rochester community, half of which are tied to our manufacturing base," said Empire State Development (ESD) Chairman and CEO designate Dennis M. Mullen. "This announcement is illustrative of the fact that manufacturing is alive, well and thriving in New York State. The critical importance of keeping 2,300 people employed in the region cannot be expounded enough, as the economic impact those jobs have are immeasurable for both the local and state economies."

Significant investment addresses current and emerging needs of military and public safety customers around the world.

MELBOURNE, FL/ ROCHESTER, NY, September 20, 2011 — Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, today officially opened the world's most advanced manufacturing center for the production of tactical radios, assured communication systems and related products. The new 573,000 square-foot center near Rochester, New York, was developed specifically to increase the company's competitiveness and address the changing requirements of military and public safety communications.

At a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Jefferson Road Operations Center, U.S. Representative Tom Reed joined Harris senior management, employees and special guests to celebrate the facility's official opening. About 1,100 employees work at the Center, which is located in Henrietta, a suburb of Rochester. The factory consolidates several previously geographically dispersed production lines into a single, integrated facility.

"The opening of this new factory represents a significant investment by Harris in the Rochester area and the global market for assured tactical and public safety communications," said Howard L. Lance, chairman, president and CEO, Harris Corporation. "It demonstrates our commitment to serve our customers by delivering products to the field faster and more efficiently. The new facility will provide cost savings and deliver a platform to drive continued innovation and growth."

"Harris is the leading provider of assured communications technology to military and public safety customers around the world. To maintain that position, we need to be increasingly competitive and innovative,'' said Dana Mehnert, president, Harris RF Communications group. "This new facility will be a key enabler in bringing products to market more quickly and sharpen our focus on meeting the current and emerging needs of a dynamic customer base. We'll leverage this factory to deliver better, more innovative and more cost-effective solutions to military and public safety personnel."

Harris is using the factory to manufacture the world's most advanced tactical communication products for military, public safety and government agencies in the United States and across the world. This includes the Falcon III(r) multiband manpack and handheld tactical radios for wideband networking on the battlefield, and the advanced Harris Unity multiband public safety radio for police, fire and other first responders. Unity is the leading public safety radio designed and manufactured in the United States.

The new manufacturing center is the result of an intensive total renovation project that converted a former Xerox Corp. office building into a production site in about 10 months. The facility distributes work across adaptable "focus factories" in support of the entire Harris RF product portfolio. These focus factories create a unique in-line production operation that integrates everything from parts delivery, assembly and testing with packaging and shipping. Future plans call for integration of a supplier village in which partners can locate production within the Harris factory.

Approximately half of Harris RF Communications' local workforce of 2,300 has relocated to the new center, with the balance of employees remaining in the city of Rochester. "RF Communications was founded here more than a half-century ago and has grown through the hard work and commitment of our employees and the support of the community,'' Mehnert said. "The opening of this facility reaffirms our commitment to Rochester and Monroe County and positions us for the future.''

"This ribbon-cutting demonstrates why we all believe in this area," Congressman Reed commented. "Western New York can again become an innovative leader in building a new high-tech economy. The decision by Harris to expand here shows that we have the educated workforce and geographical advantages that global companies are looking for."

"In today's global economy, companies have the choice of doing business anywhere in the world and Harris' decision to remain in Monroe County speaks volumes about our community's significant assets," said Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks. "Our economic development team was instrumental in working with Harris to retain 1,100 manufacturing jobs for local residents. Our economy is strengthened by Harris's significant investment in its new Henrietta facility. We are proud to partner with Harris Corporation in this effort and I'd like to thank them for their continued commitment to Monroe County."

There will be a limited purchase of the Harris sets.. and that too will end up being used for the eastern front.
The western front will see something entirely different. The Americans aren't trusted with anything.

Isn't the Eastern front more important in the longer term?

It is, but the immediate recipient of the more "safer" equipment will be the guys on the west. COMSEC is a higher priority at that front and also a lot more threatened.

Agreed, but why buy "unsafe" equipment at all, for any sector?

It is unsafe to use at the western border currently, eventually.. it will be unsafe to use at the eastern front as well... but till that happens, best to tackle the greater threat.

Any outsourced alternative would be similar, and any local sources will be subject to hacking as well, don't you think?

Which is why the source needs to be one with common regional interests and equipment one which has capability to resist being blocked /hacked.

Yes, but such as what source?

But still less prone to it than equipment that was made by the threat itself.

It depends on what "less prone" means in actual practice, right?[/QUOTE

Yes, Considering the flying crypto crack powerhouse the EC-130 is.. most codes will be broken anyway..
Just how long it will take is the yardstick line.
