What's new

The Indian Navy's underwater escape training facility [VIDEO]

Nice find, and even in Malayalam ^^

I will watch it later and can mention some main points here
Can't say I understood much of it but from what I saw:

the Video shows:

- the IN's underwater escape training (for helicopters)
- Training for bailed out aircrew landing in the water
- The IN's new (circa 2012) damage control training facility with simulators

For those interested in these sorts of things it is also worth checking out the IN's Fire Fighting Training Facility (FFTF):

Translation..
  • Located in INS Garuda, and was commissioned an year ago
  • For training helicopter crew in
  • Only US and France has similar facilities-So its the only one of its type in Asia :what:
  • Before the commissioning of this, the crew was trained in the US
  • Mandatory for all helicopter aircrew
  • Of course,its a mock up of a helicopter cabin :D
  • The heavy components in a chopper, like engines, transmission etc are located on the top,so capsizing in case of ditching is almost a certainty. That's why they train to escape from an inverted position
  • The capsizing will lead to induced spatial disorientation. So the objective is to train the aircrew to recover quickly and escape
  • The rolling motion of helicopter would take at least 5 seconds to settle down,So they'll have to wait till it settle down.
  • A normal human being can hold breath 45 seconds. They train to escape in 10-12 seconds (in case of normal exit)
  • The train in rescue procedures too (winching up)-as you can see, they can simulate harsh conditions (waves, wind, downdraft :D) in the pool
  • Another part of this facility is the parachute drop and disengagement training given to fighter pilots and crew of larger aircraft (il 38,Tu 142,P 8)
  • Each one has to do 8 runs,in different sea conditions I suppose
  • Damage control simulator,made by Goa Shipyard,simulates a flooded warship.It was commissioned in 2012
  • They train in damage control of a damaged warship in a mock-up ship section
  • When passing through a threat zone, everyone should man their stations (As you are already aware of ;) ).If the ship has been hit and a hole has been created the situation changes to 'Damage Control state 1',the repair party rushes to the scene of damage and controls the flooding.
  • There are two such facilities in India, another one is at Lonavala
  • An escape drill too can be simulated-the power supply is shut off and smoke is induced
  • After escaping through the predesignated escape route, the crew should reach their boat stations
  • Medical evacuation too can be simulated
