US used India to reduce China growth by offering an alternate investment country for Western companies. As well as to reduce China image aboard by offering democracy India alternative that supposed to be even better. That is where China vs India kind of thing happened.

Pretty good read. Basically, India's poor HDI, lack of infrastructure, corruption, internal division, as well as the lack of a positive image abroad is antithetical to India's goal of being a great power.

India wants to be viewed in the same stature as China, but is unable to. Their only similarity is in population.

China has a great image abroad (to the developing world, the developed world tends to have bad view of China) due to China's unprecedented economic miracle.

When people visit cities like Shanghai, or Beijing, they see a first world city that rivals (or even surpass) other first world cities such as London, Paris, Berlin, Moscow, Tokyo, New York, Sydney, ect. India has nothing of that sort. When people visits Mumbai, they only notice the slums and absolute poverty of the city.

At the current rate, by the time Xi Jinping leaves office in 2023, China will have the largest economy, mostly hunger free, near 100% literacy rate, world class infrastructures (advanced rail/airports, water desalinization plants, cleaner energy, north south water transfer, skyscrapers everywhere), the 2nd most powerful navy, ect.

India will still be essentially a third world country.

Same goes with the bizarre lament that FDI "per capita" for India compared to Thailand or Malaysia is low - which is silly considering that Malaysia is an oil producer and Thailand is the major industrial and automotive manufacturer for entire SE Asia which is a MUCH larger marketplace than India. Investment is driven by value of a marketplace - not the number of people in the market. This is basic economics, yet casually ignored by this "Eminent scholar".

The most comical and unabashedly juvenile "analysis" in this rant comes at the end, when he wades into the security/military sphere where his ignorance and almost child-like comparisons between nations only engender pity.

A verbose piece of writing focusing on the macro-perspective of India's strength and weakness by comparing principally with its perceived no. 1 enemy China, yes China not Pakistan although the latter can be equally if not more threatening to India, China eclipses India overwhelmingly on almost all fronts.

Much of India's strength is not generated by itself but rather because of the changing geo-political landscape due to the rise of China, it can be able to draw convenient political support and acquisiions of military hardware from China's nemesis like Japan, USA + allies.

"Your enemy's enemy is your friend" works very well in India's political and military strategies against China.

There is nothing insighful and enlightening really about it.

In concluding that India is far from being a global power, this article is actually using the contrasting statuses of India and China as a leverage to advocate for stronger ties between India and USA et al so as to achieve the dual purposes of containing a rising power in China and helping India's aspiration of becoming a global force
