The elephant dancing-India plans its own CERN
India is planning to have its own neutrino-detector lab, in order to study more about “neutrinos”, one among the most interesting substances in the scientific world. According to Prof. G Rajashekharan of institute of mathematical science , chennai , “Neutrinos rarely interact and pass through the sun and the earth unhindered. They also show quantum-mechanical phenomena—one type of neutrino oscillates into another as it propagates in space.”
Rajashkharan has several papers on neutrino behavior to his credit. According to Prof. N.K. Mondal(tata institute of fundamental research), recent experiments have showed that the mass of neutrino is non-vanishing, “but we are unsure how large the masses of the three individual neutrino types are, because of the difficulty in detecting neutrinos”. Once scientists are able to detect them and study them, they could provide information on the evolution of the universe. “Neutrinos hold the key to several fundamental questions on the origin of the universe and the energy production in stars,” says Mondal. “We have some particle answers but many details are still awaited. Also, neutrino tomography, scientists believe, will help them learn more about the structure of the earth from core onwards.”
Facilities like CERN helps scientists to study these neutrinos better. Now ,india is all set to make its own neutrino detector lab. The most ambitious science project ever under taken in india, is the result of contributions of brains from over 25 research institutes hosted by tata institute of fundamental research and the Neutrino-observatory.
The worlds largest magnetized neutrinos detector will built at Bodi west hills ,Theni district, tamil nadu. The lab will be built in two underground caverns, which will house the detectors and associated equipments, with a rock cover of around 1 km. the access to the lab will b through a 2 km tunnel through the mountains.
The mountains, like most in the southern parts of india is older and denser. Therefore the 1 km thick mountain will prevent the escape of naturral cosmic radiation. there are no trees in the region,so no tree loss. The lab will house a work force of around 100 , with at least 20 scientists and engineers located their permanently.
India is accompanied by US,China and south korea, all building there own labs. neutrino-detector labs are working under sea in Antarctica and the Mediterranean, and on land in Japan, Italy (which did the faster-than-light experiment) and Canada.
