This is essentially the conclusion I arrived at a few years back. I wouldn't say forget the idea but the way it would most likely need to be totally different from how it was originally formed.

Though a Caliphate would resolve all border/land disputes the problem is there exists a myriad of problems like the post pointed out concerning income inequalities but what isn't listed are the ethnic hostilities that exist in many parts of the Muslim world. Furthermore, the question that begs to be asked is whether each country would have an equal vote or would certain countries have a greater voting share? Essentially just trying to lump everyone together now would result in war and you can be sure non-Muslims will interfere to prolong it and weaken us.

My view is that the only way forward would be to transform the OIC into a confederacy initially united in a defence pact (i.e. we form a military alliance like NATO that would come to the aid of any Muslim nation in trouble). Afterwards we can expand into lifting visa restrictions for travel and work, giving preferential trade agreements, giving discounts for goods/services to members of the OIC (i.e. Muslim majority nations), etc... you get my drift.

The Umayyad Caliphate was quite impressive. Stretching 15 million sq. km. at it's height, from Southern France to Western India, it was the largest empire the world had yet seen. It contained 10% of the world's land area, and 1/6 the world population.

It's amazing how quickly it reached this size too.
