ISLAMABAD: Chairman of the Governing Board of Thar Coal Project Dr Samar Mubarikmand on Sunday said four more coal wells had been set on fire and as a result gas production from these would begin from next week, Geo News reported.

"A flame will be lit from gas as emission begins from these wells towards the end of this month," he said while talking exclusively to Geo News, brushing aside reports of the project being a failure.

Dr. Samar said that through underground gasification technology, electricity can be generated at Rs3 to 4 per unit while diesel can be produced at $40 per barrel. The average rate of power production through furnace oil comes to Rs20 per megawatt, he added.

He said as much as 50,000 MW electricity per day could be generated through Thar Coal reserves.

Dr. Samar Mubarakmand said a number of foreign companies including those of China had expressed interest to invest in Thar Coal Project.

Dr. Samar Mubarakmand is a nuclear scientist and a Member of Science and Technology, Planning Commission.

For last many years he with a team of dedicated scientists is trying to use coal reservoirs at Thar, Sindh, considered to be one of the largest reservoirs in the world.

What's the status of current Project? I mean how much electricity & diesel capacity we will be able to produce? and when?

Finally some tangible progress from an important project! Great news!

Congrats and Good luck!! I have a question to ask here - why is it that Dr Samar Mubarikmand is involved in almost everything running in Pakistan?

Last time Zardari said they will solve Load shedding in 24 hours, they did it in 24 hours..But at the cost of Irrigation water..They released water from dams to produce extra electricity and later there was no water for crops...

This time they are saying different things, but

Me no believe them..

Congrats and Good luck!! I have a question to ask here - why is it that Dr Samar Mubarikmand is involved in almost everything running in Pakistan?

versatile genius he is ;)

ISLAMABAD - Differences between the members of Planning Commission on the fate of ‘Thar Coal Project’ may lead to jeopardise the pace of on-going development work, which is believed to be a vital indigenous resource to meet the energy requirements of the country.

Shahid Sattar, the Planning Commission (PC) Member (Energy), on Saturday told an international energy conference said the commission had conducted the audit of ‘Thar Coal Pilot Project’ and stopped release of funds because it was thought to be impracticable. “It’s not possible to produce 10 megawatt of electricity from the Thar Coal Project,” he said, adding Dr Samar Mubarakmand had failed in producing gas through the Thar Coal field. “Dr Samar’s coal gasification is a failure as the gas flamed only for four hours and then dropped off,” Shahid said, adding that the release of more funds for the pilot project would be ‘risky’.

However, Dr Samar, when contacted, negated Sattar’s opinion, saying Thar coal gas remained flaming for almost four months and if still someone couldn’t see it, then it was his fault. He added that the oil and commission mafia was a major hurdle in the project and Shahid never visited the site. The nuclear scientist also made it clear that underground gasification work had not failed, adding 100 MW of power production could be started immediately, if the govt released the necessary funds.

Dr Samar, who is also the PC’s Member Science and Technology, further said the government had released only $10 million so far against the allocated $115 million reserved for the pilot project after the work started some three years ago.

APP adds: In a statement issued from the CM’s House Karachi, Shahid Sattar rejected the media report attributed to him regarding the project. He had only said the efficacy of the project was yet to be determined.

Sad to hear this news, as I personally had high hopes for this project. If successful this could have replicated in India or even an Indo-Pak partnership.

Fake News These scumbags dont want this project to start coz it will solve the energy problems in Pakistan. He succeed in his project. But they are not giving him required amount to move to next phase.

That's really a very good news. Otherwise there were many bad news popping up & i had lost hope in it.

Hopefully it will solve electricity crises too.:pakistan:

zardari scum bags are far more interested in IP to serve their Iranian masters and make life long kickbacks.

No offense but this Dr Samar sounds like bit of a bs artist to me. Isn't he the one who comes up with claims about Pakistan having some ridiculous amount gold and other mineral reserves and what not?

Am not surprised that a project being led by him turned out to be another exaggerated claim.

Nahi Gold reserves were proven by Canadian company

Other minerals also exists in the country and we already have small production industry for those minerals but the journalists exaggerate figures and report in big billions of dollars... Samar sahab is busy in Coal project only... and before that he was the chairman of NESCOM
