What's new

Thank you CPEC - Lowari Tunnel Completed

After multiple delays in development for about four decades, the Lowari Tunnel has finally been opened. It will cut the harsh Lowari Pass crossing from 3 hours to only 15 minutes. — at Lowari Tunnel.

Which Country would mind loans for such Development :D.
ANY sensible country would but still, do not distort the facts. The loans people are concerned about are not just for this tunnel. We all know where most of that money ends up now! So. . . .

Sorry but Lowari tunnel isn't part of CPEC but federal government. Nawaz released Rs21 billion for it to be completed in 4 years. As before 2013 only few billions rupees were spent on it because of corruption and lack of interest by Islamabad.
Is it actually open now?
It was close for at least a week or so AFTER it Nawaz Shairf announced it open and cut that ribbon! No news if it opened afterwards or still closed.

Comparing apple with orange...

Something that is exception in India is rule in Pakistan, and that is my worry. India takes loan not because it cant provide fund itself, but cost benefit analysis makes more sense to take loan for such projects and divert the budget for more return inducing projects. Even the loan that India has taken is from ADB, and the contract is given to an Indian company who would construct the bridge, and upon completion credit will go to Indian govt...

Take another example, Apple Inc, a cash giant company has debt, why so? Because it makes economic sense to have a balance between equity and loan....but in case of Pakistan that has reserve not even 1/10th of Apple, going for loan to build roads, bridges, is not because they are being economically smart but because they have no choice but to outsource their infrastructure to a powerful country, agreeing to all terms and conditions of that powerful country, which needless to say involves all contract being handed in platter to the companies from the powerful country

That's why I said China is smart, building simplest infra for Pakistan, giving all contract to Chinese companies, getting huge interest over it, and getting a god like status with the investment starved nation, that anyone who dares question their intention becomes a traitor
How's India's roads and bridges working out? China sold oil to payback infrastructure loans from Japan in the 80s and 90s as well as technical assistance from Japan infrastrucure company. There's no shame in asking for help, only foolish pride stand in the way. As for cost benefit analysis, i am sure Chinese are competent.

A grim reminder of the incompetence of the Pakistani state, which was unable to complete a relatively small project like this, without foreign assistance. This is basic infrastructure, for God's sake! Not much to be happy about, I remember this project was due since a long period of time. Progress is always good but serious questions need to be asked like "What are we doing ourselves?".
who cares as long as the cat catches the mouse ? whether the cat is black or white

The person getting the cat should wonder, why it couldn't get one before to catch the mouse. Why he had to be tormented for several days before he came to this decision. Introspection is important, its how we improve. The aim isn't just to do things, its to do them effectively and on time.

Lol

As I stated earlier on this very thread, I am very happy that it happened. But it happened with a lot of delays, cost overruns and un-necessary assistant seeking which should be avoided in the future.

This second pic. Is it a pass or is it a tunnel?
That used to be the road which Lowari tunnel will bypass cutting the travel time from 14 hours to only 7 hours according to the reports. Furthermore, this road at times used to be closed for almost six months due to heavy snow. With this tunnel supposedly the route will be an all year route now.

The notion that it should not have taken 40 years to execute the project since its inception is correct. However there are a lot of projects like Lowari tunnel that were initiated on paper but were never materialized like Neelum Jhelum Dam, Kachchi Canal and the Shahdadkot - Khuzdar road because of either the economic viability or the topographic challenges. The current government has completed all of the above project that were stuck for decades.

Will this tunnel greatly help CPEC projects?

No, it will greatly help Chitral people though.

Actually the main CPEC corridor is gonna pass through GB and into chitral and further move down towards gwader it is the jugular corridor of CPEC while lowari tunnel may be part of it in the future. But most of the money taken has never been part of CPEC...
There are further speculation that another tunnel may be constructed in the future as the whole corridor is gonna be an express way..
