Thai junta envoy admits crush on China - The Nation

At a joint press conference in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, Foreign Minister General Tanasak Patimapragorn made a surprise declaration while standing on a podium with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

"If I were a woman I will fall in love with his excellency," he told reporters in English, much to the surprise of China’s top foreign envoy who appeared somewhat unsure how to respond.

The foreign ministers are currently attending a regional security meeting in Malaysia hosted by the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).

General Tanasak, a close confidant of coup leader and now Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-Cha, made his remarks in response to a reporter’s question on Thailand’s diplomatic relations with China.

"At this moment we believe this is the best time for our relationship. Especially for my personal contact with minister Wang Yi who is a very nice and polite person," he said.

It was then that he made his surprise declaration of love.

While Thailand boasts extensive cultural, ethnic and demographic links to China, its relationship has not always been so easy.

Throughout much of the Cold War the kingdom was one of Washington’s strongest bulwarks against communism and it has traditionally remained a close regional ally of the United States.

But the latest coup, one of more than a dozen successful power grabs by the military since the end of absolute monarchy in 1932, has soured relations with the US.

In contrast Beijing has been quick to embrace Bangkok’s new military rulers, with a flurry of high-level meetings since the May 2014 coup.

Tanasak said Thailand’s relationship with China goes back more than 1,000 years.

"Let’s say we are so close, we are more than friends, just say we are cousins with a long history together," he said.

"We don’t talk diplomatic talk, we talks like personal, like family, like friend," he added.

Well I don't know much about Thai politics, but just like most Shanghainese around me, I just love that country all the way, and everything about it!

Maybe I should retire early from this noisy concrete jungle, get a beach condo in Thailand and party for the rest of my life!

Agree, Thailand is a fun place. Having been there nyself, i can attest its one of the best countries i have been to in Asia by far.
The people are kind, friendly and welcoming, more welcoming than in many other neighbouring countries. Despite the supremely chaotic politics, the country is safe and the culture is fascinating - the Buddhist temples are spectacular and the wildlife (elephants! Monkeys! Snakes! Sea life!) is a huge draw. The weather is warm and sunny (usually) and there are tons of things to see and do. There are hill retreats, jungles, beaches, islands and big bustling cities. And the shopping/partying is great(i will say the best in Asia in this field) @somsak you have a great country.
Dont know about Vietnam though, but have you been to Vietnam bro? I have it in my list of next countries to visit when im on holiday and have time. maybe next year. Wouldnt mind some advice/recommendations about the place from outsiders who have been there.

Yes. Thailand is the best country that suits my living. During my years of study and being Telecom engineers, I visited the US,China,Pakistan,Brunai, Singapore, Philippines for atleast 3 months each. I like living in my Thailand the most.
For visiting Thailand, normal attraction includes Songkran festival, Cultural Architecture , adventures on jungles, night life, food, and shopping. For PDF forumers, perhaps a bit of historical sites too.
For family travelors, town of monkeys and human peaceful coexistence lol called Lopburi . Chiangmai is more unique cultural than Bangkok. For military forumers, once a while Utapao Airport has sport events. Previous one was "Free from zombies" event where you can choose to be zombies or people. I attended Triathlon 2014 Utapao Air port, it was a great fun.

Some bad about Thailand is law too weak, No science , no winter, and crimes. The rest, yes I agree it's a great place.

I like Thailand also and thinking of relocating there after retirement. Good people and I see no, or very little difference between culture. Nice shopping malls.

A lot of retired people stays in Thailand.
