Tesla has officially started rolling out its Full Self-Driving Beta in Canada – marking the first official international expansion of the driver-assist system that Tesla taunts as an early version of a true self-driving system.

Tesla Full Self-Driving Beta

Since October 2020, Tesla has been slowly rolling out what it is calling “Full Self-Driving Beta” (FSD Beta), which is an early version of its self-driving software that is currently being tested by a fleet of Tesla owners selected by the company and through its “safety test score.”

The software enables the vehicle to drive autonomously to a destination entered in the car’s navigation system, but the driver needs to remain vigilant and ready to take control at all times.

Since the responsibility lies with the driver and not Tesla’s system, it is still considered a level two driver-assist system despite its name. It has been sort of a “two steps forward, one step back” type of program, as some updates have seen regressions in terms of the driving capabilities.

Tesla has been frequently releasing new software updates to the FSD Beta program and adding more owners to it.

As of Q4 2021, the automaker said that it almost had 60,000 owners in the FSD Beta program – all in the US.

Tesla Full Self-Driving Beta Expands to Canada

CEO Elon Musk has been promising an expansion of FSD Beta in Canada for a while now and it is finally coming.

Last night, Tesla started pushing a new software update (2022.4.5.4) to some vehicles in Canada and it enables those vehicles to “Request Full Self-Driving Beta”:

Once “requested,” you start the approval process, which consists of giving your day-to-day driving a “safety score”.

If it’s high enough, Tesla might push you the actual FSD Beta software.

Musk recently said that Tesla has been internally testing FSD Beta in Canada with about 60 vehicles. This expansion to regular owners who bought the FSD package is expected to greatly increase the number of test vehicles.

FSD Beta finally arrives in Canada with 2022.4.5.20 software update

After a very long wait, Tesla has finally started deploying Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta to owners in Canada.

The first downloads started appearing this evening with the release of the 2022.4.5.20 software update.

The arrival of FSD Beta comes almost one month to the day after Tesla first released the Safety Score on February 26.

It was initially expected that the software would then be available one week later, but a series of delays has seen the date pushed back several times.

If you have received FSD Beta, let us know in the comments below what your Safety Score was.

UPDATE 10:09pm PST: We have yet to receive a report of a non-perfect Safety Score receiving the download.

This is a developing story, keep checking back for updates…

Very impressive.

Elon Musk says FSD Beta could be ready to show European regulators within 2-3 months, reiterates “later this week” for Canadian release

Hope to see it in the UK. Self driving is the way forward.

A lot of PDF doubters have been saying it is impossible for FSD to work with just cameras, AI, and Garmin quality road maps (just like they used to say the Falcon 9 can't land successfully with its current simple design).

There's over 60,000 consumers testing it and sure it isn't 100% perfect yet but as the above comments show it definitely has potential.

I'd rather die trying than give up.

interesting how Canada is similar but not quite the same as the US...especially with housing. As he drives through his neighborhood most Americans would probably say "Hmm...I think he is in the US but something just doesn't look right". While 99% of homes look similar to those in the US the other 1% standout as not quite being the style here and that makes things seem out of place.

This is driver assisted full self driving. Musk is hiding behind semantics.

How do you figure that? The goal is to do with consumer vehicles what Waymo is already doing with commercial vehicles...just not with the huge array of ugly sensors covering the car.

Having learnt this, if I see a Tesla I’ll keep my distance.
