The Tesla P85D was already an insanely fast car — it’s the only one with an actual insane mode, for crying out loud. Now it’s even faster, thanks to a few extra bits of data delivered via owners’ Internet connections.

Prior to the latest firmware update, the P85D posted a 0-60 time of just 3.2 seconds. That’s not just good for an electric car, it’s good for any car. It was already faster than a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 and a Porsche 911 Turbo, and now it’s creeping ever closer to the 3-second mark.

All it took was a tweak to the inverter algorithm, according to CEO and mad genius Elon Musk. Following the update, the P85D can now post an incredible 3.1. One tenth of a second might not seem like much, but when you’re comparing 0-60 times it’s huge.

And it’s exactly the kind of thing Musk wants people buzzing about because it’s helping change the public perception of electric cars. Videos like this one of ordinary people reacting to insane mode in the P85D are pretty helpful, too (we’ve embedded the SFW version for you):

This isn’t the first software tweak that made a fairly significant difference to the way the P85D operated. A previous one actually increased ground clearance (by adjusting the car’s air suspension) to help owners avoid puncturing their battery packs and setting their cars ablaze.

Tesla is not alone in pushing updates to vehicles over the air, either. GM has done it before via OnStar, delivering tweaks that have improved vehicle emissions and Bluetooth functionality in their vehicles. As far as delivering additional driving excitement goes, however, Tesla’s latest download takes the cake.

Any how future is of electric cars. New era batteries are evolving but still not optimum batteries with light weight good range and quick charging available commercially. Lets hope and see.
