Well chargers are popping up all over the world. Expect gas stations to be converted to EV stations.

This is scary. Imagine a vile trucker in this tailgating and bullying people around. Smh. Also since it claims to go faster up slopes, does it have the brakes to cope? Trucks struggle on mountain roads as it is.

When Tesla unveiled its Semi electric truck last week, everyone agreed that it looked cool, but some actual truckers weren't necessarily sold on its functionality. Most observers will be impressed with the pricing if it holds, though. Tesla has listed estimated price on its Semi website for the 300- and 500-mile versions of $150,000 and $180,000 respectively, less than some pundits predicted. The fancier Founders Series, with the top specs, will cost $200,000.

Looking at the $180,000 model, it's still around $60,000 more than a diesel-powered semi truck. However, the Semi could cost around 20 percent less to run, Tesla estimates, putting savings over a million miles at around $250,000.

The Tesla Semi will improve the trucker experience with an Enhanced Autopilot (automatic emergency braking, automatic lane keeping and lane departure warning) that will improve safety for drivers and other vehicles. It also features jackknife protection, sensors and cameras meant to reduce blind spots. For a truck it'll also have crazy acceleration, which could be useful for hill-climbing and other chores.

That said, trucker Jonathon Ramsey wondered if the Semi would provide enough visibility, given the lack of mirrors and unusual center pilot position. He also said Tesla should have focused more on the brakes than the acceleration, and called some of Tesla's claims about current trucking tech questionable.

Many critics are also wondering how Tesla could sell the Semi so cheaply. Some estimates have put the cost of the 1 MWh battery alone at up to $400,000, so as Electrek speculates, Tesla must have some new technology or other tricks up its sleeve to be able to make the economics work. Potential buyers aren't spooked by the unknowns, though -- Canadian grocery chain Loblaws was the first to jump onboard with a big order, and retail giant Walmart also plans to test the truck.

Tesla’s VP of Trucks talks about new electric semi, weight, charging, and more

Earlier this month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk took the stage to present the company’s latest product, the Tesla Semi, an all-electric heavy-duty truck.

But now the executive leading the program, Jerome Guillen, gave his own presentation about the electric truck at a conference in Europe.

Guillen is a French engineer and an experienced automotive executive best known in the Tesla community for being the Model S Program Director during a crucial time for Tesla’s vehicle program (2010-2013).

Cascadia truck

Prior to joining Tesla, he was a longtime Daimler engineer and led the development of the Cascadia truck.

At Tesla, he also briefly held the roles of ‘Acting VP of Vehicle Engineering’ and he was in charge of Tesla’s entire sales and service operations as ‘VP of Worldwide Sales and Service’ during its important retail ramp up from 2013 to 2015.

After taking a leave of absence at the end of 2015, he came back in 2016 to start working on Tesla’s truck program, which culminated into the unveiling earlier this month.

Guillen introduced Musk at the event, which quickly turned into the Tesla Roadster unveiling.

But at the annual conference of Transport and Logistics in the Netherlands yesterday, Guillen had the chance to give his own presentation focused only on the truck. We reported on him confirming that Tesla will be its own first customer with a cargo route between Fremont and Gigafactory 1 in Nevada.

Now we have obtained the full audio of the presentation (Thanks to Paul van Goor), which we embedded in full below, but here are some interesting bullet points from his talk:

  • He confirmed that Tesla intends to have the same cargo capacity as diesel trucks – meaning that it should weigh about the same as a diesel truck.
  • Guillen compared the aerodynamic design of the Tesla Semi to a bullet train.
  • He also addressed development work to adapt the Tesla Semi design to European trucking regulations, which is apparently in the work, but it doesn’t sound like they have all the solutions yet.
  • The exec expects that the Tesla Semi cost of operation advantage should be even greater in Europe than in the US due to the higher cost of diesel.
  • On top of the Megachargers to enable longer routes, Tesla also plans to offer destination chargers for its electric trucks.
  • Guillen also confirmed that Tesla uses the same Autopilot hardware suite developed for their passenger vehicles to enable Enhanced Autopilot features on Tesla Semi trucks.
  • Tesla Semi offers a 360-degree view all around the vehicle with cameras in order to eliminate blind spots.
  • Like the Tesla Model 3, Tesla Semi doesn’t have a key and instead it relies on the Tesla mobile app.

Anheuser-Busch, the maker of Budweiser beer, announced today that it had placed an order for 40 Tesla Semi trucks, even though the truck won’t enter production until 2019. It’s one of the largest reservations of Elon Musk’s new truck to date.


Each reservation requires a $20,000 deposit, so that’s $800,000 in Tesla’s bank account right now (assuming the beer company placed its order after Tesla raised the deposit amount from the original price of $5,000). And if the trucks end up retailing for around $150,000, that would put Anheuser-Busch’s bill to the automaker at $6 million. (That’s if and when the trucks end up shipping — which, knowing Tesla, could be a moving target.)

unveiled last month, the Tesla Semi has racked up a fair number of preorders from several big-name players in shipping and logistics. The day after the announcement, Walmart said it had preordered 15 trucks, while JB Hunt Transport Services said it had reserved “multiple” new Tesla trucks as well.

In the weeks that followed, others lined up to put their deposit down, including Ryder, DHL, and Canadian supermarket chain Loblow. (Jalopnik just published a nice roundup of all the companies that have said they plan to purchase the trucks.)

Trucking industry veterans are watching closely to see how Tesla addresses some of the big hurdles in its path, such as per-mile cost, gaps in EV charging infrastructure, and maintenance issues.


For Anheuser-Busch, the Tesla Semi represents another opportunity to tout its commitment to reducing carbon emissions. The beer giant said it was “part of a company-wide strategy to employ cutting-edge technology to reduce the environmental impact and increase the efficiency of its operations.”

That strategy includes working with other tech-facing companies, such as Nikola Motors (“to develop and implement hydrogen-powered engines within our network”), Otto and Uber Freight (“to test autonomous driving technology”), and Convoy (“to access on-demand trucking capacity”).

Last year, Anheuser-Busch was one of the first companies to use Uber’s self-driving trucks, for a shipment of beer in Colorado. Since then, Uber’s autonomous trucks have received updated technology, but haven’t made any more public demonstrations thanks to a lawsuit from Alphabet alleging stolen trade secrets.

Global food distributor will add 50 Tesla Semi trucks to its fleet

The leading global foodservice distribution company, Sysco Corporation (NYSE:SYY), announced that it has placed an order for 50 Tesla Semi trucks as part of a commitment to reduce environmental impact for its operations.

“We are excited to begin the process of incorporating alternative-fuel trucks into our fleet,” said the company’s President and COO, Tom Bené.

Today’s announcement that Tesla’s all-electric semi-truck will become an integral part of a well-established supply chain, comes on the heels of another major announcement made by Anheuser-Busch, after the beer giant and brewing company behind Budweiser said it has ordered 40 Tesla Semi trucks.

Making a similar remark to Anheuser-Busch, Sysco’s President justified the addition of Tesla all-electric trucks into its fleet because of their cost benefits, in addition to the obvious environmental benefits. “This reinforces Sysco’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility by reducing the environmental impact of our operations. In addition to the positive environmental impacts, we will also benefit from reduced fuel and maintenance costs and drive associate enthusiasm with the introduction of new and unique technology.” said Bené.

Sysco’s reservation of 50 Tesla Semi trucks joins a list of other publicly traded companies that have committed to using battery electric trucks due to its cost savings. With a $150,000 starting price for the base version of a Tesla Semi, capable of 300 miles of range, or the $200,000 price tag for a 500-mile version, Tesla says its truck will have the lowest cost of ownership of any truck. “Electric energy costs are half those of diesel. With fewer systems to maintain, the Tesla Semi provides $200,000+ in fuel savings and a two-year payback period.” reads the description for the truck on Tesla’s website.

Shares of Sysco were trading above 3% following Friday’s announcement.
