NEW DELHI: When Pakistani militant Sajjad Ahmad was captured alive in August, it was his 'smart' gear more than the tactics he used that caught the attention of the security forces.

He did not have the usual satellite phones and radio communication devices that marked infiltrators from across the border in the past. He was equipped with smartphones loaded with software that mimic popular social media and make the user difficult to track.

Ahmad exemplifies the increasingly sophisticated militant that the Indian Army is battling in Kashmir. Such operatives, indoctrinated and trained by Pakistan, are now using high-end technology including selfdestructing software, encrypted messaging and tailor-made video calling applications.

The use of high-quality night vision devices recently acquired by militants, for instance, has caused at least two casualties of Army personnel in northern Kashmir in the past one month, army officials said. In the initial stages of insurgency, radio was the primary means of communication among militants, while satellite phones came into use after 2009.

But now militant groups are equipping their cadres with smartphones that have tailor-made applications and are run on Indian and Pakistani mobile networks. "There has been a marked shift from satphones to smartphones," said a senior official. As mobile networks have reached the remotest corners of Kashmir and towers are mushrooming across the valley, terrorists are increasingly using smartphones, he said.

The smartphones used by militants have been found equipped with software named after and similar in function to commercially available mobile apps such as WhatsApp, Viber and Skype. These have been imitated and programmed to serve only internal communication. "All these applications are voice over internet protocol and the encryption is end-to-end. This means that it is difficult to intercept a message midway," the official said.

Counter-insurgency expert at Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses retired Colonel Vivek Chadha said, "There is a state apparatus that is behind them which will ensure that there is improvement in technological capabilities of terrorists to ensure they remain ahead of the Army."

A senior Army official said, "We have the skills and we try to remain one step ahead." He said further, "We are closely monitoring the methods being adopted by terrorists."

Kashmiris should work more on keeping their communication undetected while being able to crack into indian armys communications.
Glad to see kashmiris are now changing their ways to fight the enemy.

Freedom of Kashmir will ensure lasting peace in south asia. Good going boys .

They are self destructing by nature not only in kashmir but elsewhere too, they just need a reason to trigger their self blowing natural instinct.BTW kashmir need more than 40 kg wannabe warriors to liberate it.we once took care of afghans and 1000s of terrorists roamed in the valley in the 90s,we sure can take care of these half arse mustafas equipped with software lol.

Now fingers will be pointed at Pakistan... These efforts to paint kashmiris as over powerful is an attempt to pile up blame on Pakistan, Kashmiris and Muslims. It is an attempt to keep us weak and arrest innocent kashmiris on flimsy if not no evidence.

The thing is,there is always a counter of these techs..

You use End to End Encryption,Agencies will intercept every message of that app(Like NSA did)
You use secure VOIP app, someone will find that actually it is produced by Govt funded software firm
You use SATCOM,they'll use SIGINT and COMINT..

In one word,in this age, there is no security whatever, when you're against a capable Government(They've every means to break "Electronic Communication").only secure way possibly is message passing using a human.

Not much of a problem.

In fact Hamas started using the very same tech in 2013-14 to evade Israeli surveillance but Israeli security forces successfully developed technology in just two weeks time to intercept those messages.

oh they are killing civilians mostly and are instead getting eliminated by proud sons of the land.
I would like to say that the Kashmiri militants achieve nothing by fighting-just endanger local people. I personally would not want them to fight through guns but through media and education. Fighting with arms should only be the case when you know you can win. The treaty of Hudaibah and Islamic history is a witness to this. Why did the Prophet not immediately invade Mecca after he came to Medina. Truth is we needed to consolidate.

So I would like to argue that until they have Pakistani support in an all out war and our Pakistan is strong enough we should not fight India with the sword. It is also hurting local citizens. There is no need to hurt innocent kashmiris and kashmiris welfare should be our concern since it is them we claim to fight for. I would say the same for Lucknowis too.

Other than that we can write articles, books and make videos and take pictures of the war and the mistreatment of kashmiris by India. That is also fighting. Think of how much India spends to subvert the Kashmiri demand for independence. There are news teams, there is talk of kashmiri pundits-but no talk of the innocent oppressed kashmiri who is suffering under Indian military rule.

What terrorists ? They are not killing any civilians just cleaning their land of occupying indian forces that's their duty as sons of that land.
Janab you have full potential to be the graduate of the extremist Madarsa, and recruited in the international ISIS. Best of Luck in your Global Jihad.

Good Bye.

I personally know few people who went to Kashmir .
A/c to them indian army's casualties are way higher then declared. maybe to hide the actusl situation of Kashmir.

In those Kashmiri Millitants they are not only the defractioned Kashmiri of IOK/Azad Kashmir , but also the Afghans, Pashtuns recruited for Jihad on the term of 3 Lakh per annum salary, and send by some of great CEO whose HQ is in Pakistan, most notably Hafiz Moh. Sayeed, and Lakhvi.

It was tried in 1965, the best chance, when India was in shock of 1962 defeat and P. Nehru death 1964

Its already been in operational. Back in history in 80's Haven't you remember the Benazir Bhutto speech and slogan "KASHMIR KA HAR BACHA BACHA BOLEGA AZADI AZADI AZADI", and Nusrat fateh Ali Khan song about the miserable condition of the Kashmiri under Indian Occupation.
