Terrorist leader loses Belgian nationality

It was in 2015 that Fouad Belkacem was sentenced to 12 years in jail and fined 300,000 euros following a conviction for being the leader of a terrorist outfit. Belgium then started the procedure to remove his Belgian nationality. The terrorist leader enjoys dual Belgian-Moroccan citizenship. Without his Belgian nationality Fouad Belkacem can be expelled to Morocco.

Fouad Belkacem can still take the matter to the court of cassation where procedural issues are settled.

Belgian asylum secretary Theo Francken (pictured below) has welcomed the news on social media. On Twitter he wrote: "Terrorist leader loses nationality. Excellent, but it should happen automatically in the event of a terrorism conviction."
