Two police officers injured, one suspect reported dead in gunfire exchange
AMMAN Joint military and security forces on Wednesday exchanged fire with a group of wanted criminals in Sweilehs Kamaliyah neighbourhood, northwest of Amman, and arrested 11 of its members, according to a police statement.
Later on Wednesday, the police announced that a member of the group died of his wounds and two police officers were critically injured in an earlier raid in east Ammans Jabal Al Nasr area, where the special police force came under fire and arrested the two assailants.
The group members all have criminal records, and are wanted for serious crimes, the statement said.
Public Security Department (PSD) Spokesperson Lt. Col. Mohammad Khatib said in the statement e-mailed to The Jordan Times that a joint team from the Jordan Armed Forces, the PSD and the Gendarmerie Department took part in the operation.
Nearly a week ago, we had information indicating that a terrorist cell comprising 10 to 15 members... was planning to carry out terrorist acts and public intimidation in different parts of Amman, Khatib said.
He noted that the suspects crimes included armed robbery, murder, blackmail and theft, adding that the recent information gathered by intelligence units indicated that the group was planning terrorist acts in the Kingdom.
The statement added that the group was heavily armed and the exchange of gunfire lasted for several hours.
Kamaliyah residents said the police imposed a curfew to secure the parameters and prevented people from coming near the vicinity for their safety, adding that they could hear the gunfire and police helicopters circling over the area.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs-of-Staff Gen. Mashal Al Zaben, PSD Director General Gen. Hussein Majali and Director General of the Gendarmerie Department Lt. Gen. Tawfiq Tawalbeh were present at the scene and supervised the operation.
