Terrorist arrested for Sri Lankan team attack in Lahore

A key terror suspect has been arrested for his involvement in the March 2009 brazen attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore that left six players injured and six escorting policemen dead.

Express Tribune on Tuesday quoted police officials as confirming the arrest of Qari Abdul Wahab, alias Umar alias Farhan alias Behram alias Umar Daraz, son of Akbar.

At least six Sri Lankan cricketers -- captain Mahela Jayawaredene, his deputy Kumar Sangakkara, Ajantha Mendis, Thilan Samaraweera, Tharanga Paranavitana and Chaminda Vaas -- were injured when the team bus came under heavy attack from gunmen en route to the Gaddafi Stadium for a Test match.

Six escorting policemen were killed in the attack that took place near the Liberty Market crossing.

The attacker was identified with the help of the footage of the terror strike.

"He was the one of the shooters," police officials said.

Wahab hails from to Dera Ismail Khan and was affiliated with Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the police said.

Umar Virk, a police official, said that Wahab was arrested Monday.

Trained at a camp in Waziristan, Wahab knows how to prepare suicide jackets, load vans with explosives and operate all types of weapons, the official said.

He said that Wahab had come to Lahore to carry out more attacks.

Key attacker on SL team held - GEO.tv

LAHORE: Lahore police have arrested a key suspect allegedly involved in the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore in March 2009, Geo News reported.

The suspect, Qari Abdul Wahab alias Umer, was rounded up by officials from the Raiwind area of Lahore, police officials said.

Superintendent of Police Lahore Umer Virk confirmed that Wahab was involved in a number of terrorism cases including the Sri Lankan team attack.

Virk said Qari Umar belonged to defunct Lashkara-e-Jhangvi (LJ) and provided information to other terrorists regarding their targets and locations. Virk also termed the arrest a major success against terrorism network.

Police recovered a suicide vest, mobile phones and 2.5 million rupees cash from Qari Umer.

Officials added that they were hopeful that further investigation would reveal more about LeJ’s ongoing activities.

This latest arrest was termed a major breakthrough in light of the possibility of terrorist attacks during the upcoming holy month of Muharram.

You seem to be very well versed with how intelligence agencies organize terrorism and probably know more about it than I do, and you have clearly reached your own conclusion about the attack discussed here. So I don't want to argue with you on that or try to convince you otherwise.

What I find interesting though, is that for most of you it is extremely difficult to apply the same logic when it comes to terrorist attacks on Indian soil. If anyone from Kashmir does something, ISI has no hand as he is clearly an Indian citizen. Many of you even have the nerve to claim that Ajmal Kasab is an indian and the whole 26/11 plot was something India planned, when even his father back in Pakistan recognized him (you don't even have to google anything about him, you know exactly what I am talking about). Why the double standards???...Won't everything you said work the other way round as well?

Indians are desperately trying to clear their hands before the elections.

There was no video where attackers could be identified.

Warrants for Lankan team attackers | Sport | DAWN.COM

LAHORE: A Lahore High Court division bench on Wednesday issued arrest warrants for three people wanted in the attack on Sri Lankan cricket team case.

Qari Muhammad Mushtaq, Amanullah and Ubaidur Rehman are wanted in the case.

A state counsel sought more time for their arrest.

The bench accepted the plea and adjourned hearing till Feb 1 and issued fresh warrantsfor the accused.

On previous hearing, the bench had directed the Lahore police chief to arrest the accused.

The bench issued this order on a Punjab government`s petition seeking cancellation of bails earlier granted to six accused involved in attack on Sri Lanka team by the different courts.
