FC vehicle targeted in Peshawar, 3 killed

PESHAWAR: Four people, including a woman, were killed and 13 others injured in an explosion in Peshawar, Express News reported on Tuesday. The injured include two FC personnel.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemned the attack which took place near an FC vehicle on Sher Shah Suri Road in the city.

The vehicle belonged to Brigadier Khalid Javed who was slightly injured in the attack. However, another FC officer accompanying him was killed because of the explosion.

Javed is the second-most senior officer in the FC force.

Security forces have cordoned off the area and started their initial investigation.

The injured were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital and CMH Peshawar, two of whom are reportedly in critical condition.

Lady Reading Hospital spokesperson Syed Jameel Shah confirmed the death toll, saying the hospital received three bodies.

CCPO Peshawar Ejaz Ahmed, while speaking to Express News, said it was a suicide attack. According to him, the suicide bomber was in a car and detonated explosives as soon as he got close to the FC vehicle.

“Explosives weighing 45kg were planted in a Suzuki Alto while we also found shells inside the vehicle,” he added.

Investigators believe the car was coming from Kohat Road.

IG Shafqat Malik said police have found the chassis and engine numbers of the car and are close to reaching the owner of the vehicle.

He said the police are yet to confirm if the car was stolen or not.

Senior police official Najibur Rehman said the attack appeared to be in reaction to the ongoing military operation in North Waziristan.

In 2010, Frontier Constabulary (FC) Commandant Sifwat Ghayyur and three other people were killed and 11 injured in a brazen suicide attack in the very area.
